North Forsyth students win science award it Six North Forsyth High School students received a $500 science award from the Alpha Pi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Inc. of Winston-Salem at the Recognition Program on Fri day, May 22. The science award is broken down into first, second* and third place winners in the biological and Physical sciences. The winners for Biological science were Sessie Vickers, who won 1st place and received $150 for her research project on "Car diovascular Health in African and White American Adolescents"; Harley McGrew, who won 2nd place and received $75 for the research project "What are the Effects of Alcohol on Mice?"; and David Beeson, who placed 3rd and received $25 for the research pro ject "Photobiology." Winners in the Physical Sci ence category were Matt Liner, who won 1st place and received $150 for his project "The Effect of Stomach Acid on Polypeptides"; lYacy Wilson, who placed 2nd and won $75 for her project "The Effect of Purity of Salt on Its Crys tallization Process"; and Becky Hunter, who placed 3rd and won $25 for the project "Chemistry in your Washing Machine." The science award is named for Lowden E. Anderson Sr., a retired middle school science teacher of the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County schools. Anderson is chairman of Community Ser vices of his fraternity and has been involved in a Saturday tutorial pro gram for students at risk in science at Cook Middle School, and the tutorial program at United Metropolitan Baptist Church.
