In announcing the university's response to jhe NCAA report. Chan cellor Thompson said. "The situa tion could have been worse, but the Committee acknowledged our case as being unique and afforded us some leniency. I am also grateful to the. Committee for recognizing our cooperation throughout the investi gation," Thompson said. "As chief executive officer. I take full responsibility for past laxi ty of administration in athletics, but we have made some bold changes since 1990. changes that put us well on the w ay to addressing all of the issues cited by the NCAA." Within the past three years, the university has taken anin<^ specific actions designed to increase control of and accountability within the ath letics program: ? Hired a new athletics director who has no coaching responsibili ties. ? Completed a self-study of intercollegiate athletics. ? Established an internal facul ty/student-athlete classroom moni toring system concerning attendance and academic performance and, if appropriate, discipline. ? Revised the campus-based operational procedures for intercol legiate athletics and, for the first time, had them approved by the Board of Trustees. ? Established. ..as a subunit of the Board of Trustees and by revi sion "of the bylaws of the Board... an Intercollegiate Athletics Standing Committee. ? Hired an Intercollegiate Ath letics Compliance Officer to moni tor as WSSU compliance proce dures. ? Completed an operational pro cedures compliance manual for NCAA, CIA A and institutional ath letics compliance. Established a briefing proce dure for the chanceHor to be con ducted prior to his signing the NCAA Institutional Compliance form. Restructured and upgraded the authority and powers of WSSU's Intercollegiate Athletics Committee over the conduct of athletics. Robert J. Brown. Chairman of the WSSU Board of Trustees, called the situation "regrettable," but echoed the Chancellor's confidence in the restructured athletics pro gram. "The Board of Trustees has established a capable committee on athletics, chaired by Board member Attorney Robert Vaughn Chancel lor Thompson has also instituted a series of actions far exceeding what is normally required to insure strict compliance." Brown said. As Chair of the Board's Athlet ics Committee, Vaughn stated, "The university can live with the penalties imposed by the NCAA, and the administrative management and.*, monitoring procedures we've put in place in recent years should elimi nate the possibility of a recurrence of such violations." Brown added: "WSSU will move forward from this action with more determination and a clearer? vision of its educational mission.
