"lations didfi't matter to him.
In an interview with The
Chronicle. Blount said s "I was
aware of them and would have
taken the job e\en if I'd known the
penalties."
Blount, a 1980 Ram graduate
who was a four-year starter on the
football team, quarterbacked the
WSSU eleven to a 33-11 record
over hus college career, including
1CW1 and 1 1 - 1 marks in 19"?7 and
1978. Those were back-to-back
Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association championships that
included post-season play in the
and the Delaware Blue Hens.

While admitting he received
"feelers" from other schools. Blount
said he wanted to stay in black col

the young youth." he said. "If 1 can
help save a few. I'll feel better."

Gold Bowl and NCAA Division II
Playoffs.
The Rams lost to South Caroli
na State in the former and got to the
second round of the NCAA's before
losing to Coach Tubby Raymond
month that no recruiting was done
has hampered Blount in his search
to improve the WSSl team.
He refused to reveal any names
of recruits, but said he had 8 that
S
were leaning to WSSl'. including
State University, answered questions
wife, Ava, a native of Richmond Va.,
Braswell. who handles the lineback
ers and is the lone holdover frpm
former coach Bill Hayes' staff.
Blount said he will wait until
after he's done recruiting to name
the rest of his assistants. He's anx
much as they want or a strength
coach can work with them as long
as there isn't a football involved.
"Division II schools have
approximately 45 scholarships to
give," he said. "Division I-AA has
65 and the rules are totally different.
I'm going to have to read my rules
book as I go," he laughed.
The new coach mentioned four
returnees for the Rams this fall,
including all-CIAA players Antonio
Stevenson, a linebacker and Richard
Hundley, running back^who gained
over 1200 yards last. season. Also
singled out were Ravell McMillan,
quarterback, and Orand'e Gadson,
wide receiver. _
Asked about a prediction for
the upcoming seasoiT, Blount
smiled. "That's hard to do." he said.
"But realistically. 1 would be happy
to match last year's 7-4 record."
He said he feels Elizabeth City
and Norfolk State would be the top
contenders in the CIAA this fall
with N.C. Central a much improved
team as well. The Ram schedule
includes dates with 1-AA schools
N.C. A&T and Howard University.
"Those latter games helps
strengthen the schedule for ratings
as well as being very competitive
between the schools," Blount said.
"But I'd also be interested in play
ing other in-state schools."
