Mount Tabor's JV Boys Team Strives For # 1 DEBY JO FERGl'SOS Spccia! to the Cnronn le Frank Martin/JV boys coach at Mount Tabor Higfy School is in his sixth year of leading the team to countless \ ictories. Martin, a Virginia Tech gradu ate, hales from Stewart Virginia and transferred to Winston-Salem after several visits to the Piedmont area. "1 grew up playing basketball and baseball and I always knew that game. WebsteF handles pres>ure and comei through during the crunch," Martin concluded. According to Chris Vernon. "I've been playing basketball since I was about four or five years old. then started on the mite team. I transferred from Forsyth Count) Day school this year, so this is my first season at Mount Tabor. "The JV team here is real ath letic and we play w ith a strong team effort. With the way we arc playing now I believe we will have "The JV team here is real athletic ' and we play with a strong team effort r ? Chris Vernon I wanted to coach. I did coach the little league baseball team while I was jn college," Martin said. Martin's last six years coaching basketball has left a pretty impres sive record including: 18-3, 13-7, 8-2, 13-7, (assistant coach), and this year his team holds a 10-3 season record. "We play up-tempo and try to put a lot of pressure on the other team I stress good defense and our goal every game is to hold the other team back to no more than 55 points. If we can do that I feel we can win any game," Martin added. "We have thirteen JV players, with five returning starters includ ing: Daniel Webster, Chris Vemon, Steven Balance, Bobby Jones, David Yarbrough, Christian Byrd, Matt Boss, B. J. Freidinger, Jamont Mclntyre, Micheal Thompson, Steve Bomgardner, Pat Hairston, and Ben Sayefs. All are excellent players, but our top two on the team is Webster and Vemon. "Vernon is a point guard who runs the team. He averages 15 points a game with five assists and seven or eight^teahfrVemon usual? Ly doesn't come off the floor unless he fouls out. "Webster i? our lead scorer with about 17 points a game, and eight rebounds. He is the player you can depend^on at the end of the no problem winning the confer ence," Vernon said. Another favorite sport of Ver nons is baseball. He played the position of shortstop and pitcher. "I would like to play college baseball or basketball. A sports scholarship would help because I plan to attend the University of NC at Chapel Hill to major in business Management. My dad owns FnT~ own company and I want to help him in it," Vernon concluded. Daniel Webster, the son of Kay and Daniel Webster, has been play ing basketball for"about ?ight years and began his career at the recre ation department. "My dad gave me a basketball when I was younger and use to take me out to the recreation department and just let me shoot. 1 guess that's what really got me started in bas ketball. "I feel we have a good JV team here at Mount Tabor because we all work together. It's a team effort, not an individual goal. We all strive for the top to be the number one team. Axcording- to -Webster? he plans to further his career and attend college to major in engineer ing. but at the present time has not selected the college he plans to attend. Lady Rams Lose llth Straight Game By ED MEYERS Spccial to the Chronicle Winston-Salem State's women's coach Stenson Conley summed up his team's efforts Mon day night, following an 83-58 loss to Fayetteville State, the 1 1th of the season without a victory. "We're not playing smart," he stated. "We're committing too many dumb plays." HTs understandable for the frustrated Lady Ram mentor. WSSU is the only team in the CIAA without a victory. Even lowly Livingstone has on win ... along with 1 3 losses. Junior guard Kendra Home has been the lone bright spot for the Lady Rams, averaging 15.7 points per game, She is the only player among the top 10 in statistics any where in the CIAA with the lone exception of Dennetra Parker, fresh man center, who is averaging one blocked shot per game, good for the No. 10 spot in that category. In Saturday night's 93-49 loss to Johnson C. Smith, the Lady Rams committed 25 turnovers and were outrebounded 53-43 in a rough-and tumble contest. The Lady Golden Bulk* took an early 33-12 lead and held a 47-24 advantage at intermission. A 24-9 run at the start of the second half doomed WSSU to its 10th consecutive loss. Only Yolan da Collette, sophomore guard, cold manage double figures with 17 points. Horns was held to nearly 7 points under her average and fin ished with just 9. The Lady Rams nonaged to hit just 20 of 76 attempts from the field in a dismal shooting performance of 26 percent. Against Fayetteville State, WSSU shot marginally better, hit ting 24 or 73 for 33 percent, but again was outrebounded, 55-48,^ although they committed just 15, turnovers compared to 16 for the visiting Lady Broncos,. A 41-19 first half scoring advantage quickly dashed any hopes WSSU had of its first win. Home took scoring honors with 14 points, followed by frosh forward Shondra McSwain's 10 points. Collette did yeoman work on the boards with 10 rebounds, but Fayetteville's shoot ing of 49 percent more than offset that. The Lady Rams actually stayed pretty well, even in the second half, as^he visitors only had a 3-point scoring maring, 42-39. but the first "half advantage of 22 points decided the game early. hirolator. ^rniumPU/t r W M Reman ufactu red W Water Yp Egch Exchj.
