Seniors Make Vacation
A Learning Experience
Some of the best opportunities
for adventure and personal enrich
ment ctfmes after retirement. Thou
sands of older Americans have made
this discovery through Elderhostel,
an exciting program designed
specifically for adults over the age
of 60.
Elderhostel offers travel and
learning adventures for seniors from
all walks of life. All that's needed is
an open mind and a desire to pursue
new ideas to make new friends.
During a typical week-long pro
gram. participants join a group of
30-40 classmates, living in campus
dormitories or nearby hotels, dining
in the student cafeteria, and taking
up to three classes a day taught by
faculty. Courses are a smorgasbord
of traditional and not-so traditional
subjects, from explorations of the
natural environment and hands-on
instruction in computers, to black
American poets and Native Ameri
can culture.
Elderhostel was founded in
wssu
1975 as a response to the lack of
inexpensive and enjoyable post
retirement activities for older adults.
Last year, nearly 237.000 Ameri
cans participated in programs at
more than 1,800 host institutions in
all 50 states, the 10 'Canadian
provinces and in 43 countries over
seas. Average cost for a one-week
program in the United States is
$295, and includes all meals, lodg
ing, classes, a variety of course
related field trips and excursions,
and often evening social activities a
well. Overseas programs are two-to
-four weeks in length, and the cost
includes round-trip airf are.
Elderhostekoffers scholarships
to i n d i v i d u als w h o are u nable to
