VI Volunteer Training Sessions Family Services Inc. of Forsyth County will have a volunteer train ing session op Saturday, February 17, 1993, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for volunteers interested in working with its Family Services Shelter for battered women and their children. The training will include infor mation on battering, medical and legal procedures, and crisis inter vention counseling skills. Family Services Inc. staff will present the training. Volunteers are needed to' staff the'domestic violence crisis line at night and on weekends. Other volunteers are needed to plan and supervise activities and outings for shelter residents and their children. Daytime volunteers are needed to assist victims during court proceedings. Through its Family Violence Division, which includes the Shelter and Sexual assault respond pro grams, Family Services Inc. pro vides shelter, counseling, informa % ? ? tion. and 24-hour crisis intervention services for victims of domestic vio lence and sexual assault. WSSU Students Research * On African- American Health Three Winston-Salem State University students presented research on the health and physical activity habits of African-Ameri cans at the annual meeting of the Southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine in Nor-i folk. Va., Jan. 28-30. The students. Victoria Schny der. Tracee Hodge and Sessie Vlck ers. and a student from Wake Forest University, were the only under graduates to present at the profes sional meeting. Schnyder's oral presentation on cardiovascular risk among African American male employees at the Department of Transportation, was commended by Dr. Steven Blair. the keynote speaker/ -for the confer ence and one of the leading exercise epidemiologist in the country. Dr. Blair, of the Cooper Clinic in Dal las. Texas, is responsible for much of what is known about the serious health consequence of a sedentary lifestyle. Hodge presented research on the effect of an "activity coping" lifestyle as a contributor to increase blood pressure tn African-Ameri cans. The study by Vickers dealt with physical inactivity and cardio vascular risk in a group of local high schools students; During the conference. Schnyder was elected student representative to the ACSM's executive board, becom ing the only undergraduate to eser hold the position. The three WSSl' students are members of Project Strengthen, and their research is supported by the Minority Biomedical Research Pro ject. which is a part of the National Institutes of Health. Project Strengthen is under the direction of Dr. Wilveria Atkinson, chairman of the department of life sciences.
