Sethos Temple Holds Annual Election ? Carpenter Elected Illustrious Potentate S ethos Temple. No. 170. recently held its annual election of officers tor the 1993 >ear. With 50 Nobels in attendance, the election was conducted by Nobel Samuel of Winston-Salem. NC. The following officers were elected: Nobel Prelow Carpenter, illustrious potentate; Novel Weldon Hay. chief rabban. Nobel Curtis Clemmons. assistant rahban. Nobel Alfonzo Martin, high priest and prophet; Nobel Edward Russell, ori ental guide; Nobel tssac Falls, recorder, and Nobel Nathan ColsonT treasurer. The appointed officers* were named by the illustrious potentate at the first meeting, which was held in January. Illustrious Potentate Carpenter, Sims Center Takes Kid s To Circus On Feb. 7 at 1 p. iff. Sims and Sprague Street Recreation Centers ; tadk 20 kids to the Ringing Broth ,. ers/Barnum Bailey Circus for an evening of enjoyment. Ben Piggott and Knsty Thomas spearheaded the project for taking the children who attended the learn ing centcr for positive incentives fof . their above average grades in school, The following people volun j teered to help supervise the chil dren: Clarence Brown of the Sims center staff; Jamie Bridges, former Miss W.S.S.L';. and officer Ronnie Christian of the Winston-Salem Police Department. Cassandria Penn (Wiley School) Severus Hicks (Griffin Ele mentary). Michelle Davis (Wiley School). Frederick Dilworth (Wiley School) and Tramond Cobb (Wiley School) enjoyed the Chicago Kids, a group of innercitv kids who per formed stunts and tumblings for the Ringing Brothers Circus. The Chicago kids are also school-aged kids who maintain good grades while performing with the circus. "This was an event that was educational and fun." said Ben Pig gott. center supervisor for the Sims Center. AKAs Donate To Crisis Control Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha ;Rappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recently completed a public service project at "Crisis Control Ministry. Members ?lit the chapter, with the assistance of Sura Lee Knitwear, donated winter 'underwear for distribution to the patrons of the center. According to "the Rev. Ciinny Britt, directors, this has been a dire need during the win ier months. The project was coordinated by "Clara Ciaines, chairman. Other members of the committee include Barbara Browij, Mary Bruce, I " Frances Coble. Bronnie Daniels, Annie Hairston, Elaine McCloud, Barbara Phillips. Ethel Walker and Virginia Wiseman. After a September report by the Census Bureau showing that approximately 36 million Ameri cans lived below the poverty line in 1991 (33% of whom were black). Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, line, launched an international campaign to heighten awareness of the world food problem and the struggle against hunger and poverty. In October 1992. AKA sponsored a major food drive and a letter-writing campaign to U.S. senators, urging them to support the Urban Aid Bill and the Children's Initiative Dr. Mary Shy Scott, international presi dent of AKA, stressed to AKA members that it is critical that black resources remain in black communi ties, and our solidarity in the strug gle against poverty is strengthened. Room of Forsyth County Public , Library hosted a luncheon for the winners of the 1992 "Desig A Bookmark" contest. The contest and luncheon have been annual events vsince 1983 and have encouraged children from ages 5-16 to use their imaginations to design creative and thought provoking bookmarks. Over 1000 entries were ?received and winners were selected from 17 schools 1 1 public schools, 4 private schools and 2 home schools. The luncheon recognized each win ner. Winners received first copies of tfieir bookmark to share at home and with classmates. The remaining bookmarks will be distributed throughout the library system for 199?.
