The Darryl Hunt Defense Com
mittee. which has been critical of*?
the Winston-Salem Police Depart
ment's handling of the case, has
asked the city to provide protection
for Hunt's witnesses.
The Rev. John Mendez, pastor
of Emmanuel Baptist Church and a
member of the Hunt Defense Com
mittee. said at a recent news confer
ence on that the Hunt case >vas like
a cloud hanging over the entire
city."
He said the city should provide
Hunt with protection.
"It is our belief Darryl was -
denied a fair trial not simply
because he is black, poor and male,
but because of the gross incompe
tence, arrogance and misconduct on
the part of the police...," he said.
"They simply cannot admit they are
wjong. All of the cover-ups and
harassment of witnesses wjjl not
make this case go away."
Meanwhile, the state Supreme
Court has ordered that motions that
were part of Hunt's appeal of his

MONDAY -SATURDAY ? M - SUNDAY 14
murder conviction be sent to
Forsyth Superior Court for a hear
ing.
Benjamin Sendor. an assistant
appellate defender in Raleigh uho is
representing Hunt, said he found it
unusual that the court moved so
quickly on the motions. Sendor and
a prosecutor presented their cases
before the Supreme Court on Feb.
17. and the justices ruled on" the
motions the next morning.
"I feel we re on solid ground,
but as always I find it hazardous to
speculate on what our chances are."
Sendor said.
? Hunt, who is black, was found
guilty of killing a white journalist
Deborah Brotherton Sykes nine
years ago in Winston-Salem. Sykes'
body, found on a grassy slope
downrown in 1984, had been
stabbed several times. Autopsy
results indicated she had been raped
and sodomized.
The motions in Hunt's appeal
for a new trial concern two con
ment^; the witnesses who could
have testified in his second trial did
not because Winston-Salem police
detectives "coerced" two of them
into not doing so. and Withheld the
address ot a third, and that the pros
ecutor in Hunt s second trial in
Catawba Counts presented a closing
argument b: Ned on emotionalism.
He wasnt arguing the tacts,
said Sendor.
According to court documents,
the three witnesses were Lisa Rene
McBride. Willis Wa\ne Reynolds
and A1 Morrison Kell>. The docu
ments said a ke\ prosecution wit
ness. Johnn> Gras . confessed to
each of them separate!) before
i Hunt s i second trial. "
Sendor explained that the hear
ing will be like a mimtrial but one
without a jury. A Superior Court
judge will hear the case, and both
sides will ha\e the right to put on
witnesses. Sendor said. A date has
n ; k.vn set tor the hearing Sfnrinr
said
Sendor said that one indication
that the iustices may be leaning
towards granting Hunt a new trial is
that they decided to address the
motions first, then hear the appeal.
The motion concerning the absence
of the w ltnesses in the second trial is
a major element of the overall
appeal. Sender said. It is possible,
he said, that if the Superior Couri
judge rules in favor of Hunt on the
motions, the Supreme Court justices
could order a new trial without mak
ing an official ruling on the appeal.
