By DEBY JO FERGUSON
Chronu IcSp* c Muter
Ben Piggott. Center Supervisor
of the William C Sims Recreation
Department, classifies himself as a
servant of the Happy Hill Garden
Community.
"Our mission at the Center is to
provide positive programs that will
promote self-esteem. Piggott said.
The team of Clarence Brown
and Belinda Hardy are also part of
the mission to assist me with the
very talented community of Happy
Hill Garden.
"I am native of Winston-Salem,
and myself along with my family
have a strong educational back
ground. I was a graduate of Liv
ingston College in Salisbury, N.C.
My sister. Felecia Piggott. is a
teacher at Mount Tabor High
School. My mother. Mae Piggott.
teaches Sunday School at Union
Baptist Church; Daniel Piggott is a
principal at Indepence High School
and Diane Piggott teaches math at
East Forsyth High School. Piggott
added.
Ben Piggott's commitment to
serv ing the community started while
working with Mr. Horace Bonner,
who was director of the 14th Street
Recreation. Boner allowed Piggott
to use his creativity to revise the
popular Big Apple Summer Basket
ball League in 1980. >?
His surge for youth began in
I
Ben Piggott
1982 when Piggott became the Ath
letic Director for the Salvation
Army Boy's Club. He developed
numerous programs for the young
men ages six- 18 years of age. It was
while he was an athletic director at
the Boy's Club that the procedure of
education was implemented into his
program. "Education First and Ath
letics Second This has always
been Piggotts guide to success to
lead young men and women to high
er goals.
Piggott's sense of community
service led him to the Goodwill
Rehabilitation Center from 19? 2 Sc
as a dormitory counselor, working
with developmental disability
clients and servimg as a recreation
director.
Trom 1987-91 I worked as a
Trades Instructor tor the Forsyth
Industrial System of Winston
Salem. There I worked with devel
opmental disable clients by educat
ing them through preparation for the
world of w ork. This was a branch of
service of the Forsyth -Stokes Men
tal Health Division.
In October 1991 I was named
Center Superv isor for the new

located in Happ\ Hill Garden. Once
I got there I found a stereo type that
needed to be changed. At this point
I began m\ mission to improve
community relations by implement

interest*
With a strong emphasis on
education, instituted the learning
center. Education first and athletics
second became the center's motto
and driving force for implementing
the Student of the Month program
which was based on having above
average grades.
In an effort to bring about
community cooperation and unity
the Happy Hill Garden Boy's Club
Director Ron Bethune developed a
Reading and Math Lab to assist with
Sim's Center Academic Endeavors
in hopes of changing children s atti
tudes towards education". Piggott
continued.
The organization of a Boy's
Club and Sims Center Basketball
League was used as a educational
incentive.
"In order to play basketball for
the Boy's Club and Sims Center
League, the participant must attend
either the reading and math lab at he
Boy's Club or the Learning Center
at the William Sims Center. This
program is for kids ages six through
18. I also tried to developed many l
special events to lure community
residents inside the Sims Center,
Piggott said."
Piggott also worked with the
following agencies in the Happy
