New Jail on Target for Jan. Completion ? Facility .will hold / ,016 inmates By MARK R MOSS L hroHlctf Suff Writer ? ? Despite a recent spate of inclement weather, construction of the the S48 million, state-of-the-art Forsyth County Jail facility will open in January. Lt. R.G. Knight, of the Forsyth County Sheriff s Department, said that although construction of the 11 - story high rise was hindered by the recent Snow storm, the building will open on schedule. The construction budget is also on schedule and the project is expected to come in at the amount allotted, he said "We're all really excited about this building," Knight said. "I think the community will accept it when it's finished." He said that the new jail will stand as a testament to the many people who have been involved in the project. Knight's current responsibilities include overseeing the transition team -five full-time officers from the Sheriffs Department who are charged with making sure that those who work in the current jail are aware of the features the new jail will offer. The transition team will eventually be responsible for train ing officers in how to use the new facility. Size and technology seem to be the major difference between the new jail and the current one. The bounded by Church and Chestnut streets and Second and Third streets will be capable of housing 1.016 inmates in 736 cells. Double bunks will be placed in 272 cells and the remainder will be single. Knight said. By contrast, the current jail, built in 1952. has 396 beds and averages 380 inmates daily. Knight said the jail is often overcrowded and has housed as many as 450 pris oners at one time. Technology in the new jail w ill enable correction officers to practice "blended superv ision." which means that an officer can supervise inmates by being in the units with them or by watching them on closed circuit. Knight said. Knight said there will be nine housing units throughout the build ing and each of the units will have indoor and outdoor recreational areas. The facility will contain its own laundry, infirmary and kitchen. It also will accommodate pri marily inmates who have been con victed of misdemeanors and are serving terms of less than six months. Knight said. The facility will house felons awaiting court dates and others who can't post bond. Knight said. He said he is hoping that future sentences for lawbreakers w ill be more creative, so that serv ing time won't be the only way a defendant can pay back his debt to society. That, and a new program to help inmates earn high school diplomas, he said . should help keep the popu lation of the new jail below what it can accommodate.
