Evans Visits Sims Recreation Center
Silence is golden as the old say
ing goes, but last Thursday silence
was the golden opportunity for stu
dents at the Learning Center of Sims
Recreation Center to experience and
witness the success of a star athlete.
In a heart-to-heart discussion,
Donald Evans, defensive end for the
Pittsburgh Stcelers shared his opin
ion of success and offered words of
encouragement to the students of the
Learning Center.
In just a few words he gave the
students the motivation to accom
plish any task and these words ment
more than any teacher could ever
say.
During the regular Thursday
session of the Learning Center. Mr.
Evans captivated the attention of
approximately 35 students and
teacher-volunteers as he spoke of
his determination to becorrfe suc
cessful. ?
Evans, admonished the youth to
be whatever they wanted to be. He
emphasized the importance of stay
ing in school and obtaining good
grades.
Respect for those in authority
was another main issue as he plead
ed with the studenj- to continue to
participate in programs such as the
Learning Center.
Final Registration Little League
Twin City Little League will
launch its 1993 baseball campaign
with a "Pig Pickin' and Bake Sale at
East Winston Shopping Center on
Saturday, April 3. The event, one of
TCCLL's main fund raising activi
ties, will be held from 9 a.m. until 6
p.m.
Melvin "Rip" Wilkins. TCLL
president said he hopes the commu
nity will turn out to support the.
league.
"This is a very important event
for us from a stand point of
finances," Wilkins said.
"This program reaches a lot of
kids in the community and keeps a
lot of children off the streets. This
pig pickin* is a chance for people to
get involved in doing something
positive. We need all the help we
can get.
"Our prices on this activity is
very reasonable," Wilkins added.
"It also gives people a chance
to come out and meet the people
who are in charge of running the
program. It has been a very success
ful event the last two years and we
just hope that we get the same type
of support we've had in the past."
"The League will also hold its
final registration and tryouts this
weekend. Tryouts will be held Fri
day, April 2, at Civitan Park, begin
ning at 5:30. Also, the league will
hold a clinic for all current coaches
and players at Civitan.
"Anyone interested in joining
any of TCLL's programs is urged to
come by and sign up. The progTam
offers teams in boys ,md girls T-Ball
(6-8), boys major league baseball
(9-12), girls softball (9-12), senior
league baseball (13-15), girls soft
ball (13-15), boys big league base
ball (16-18), and girls softball (16
18)," Wilkins said.
"TCLL> is making a special
effort to get more girls involved in
the program this year. We're really
pushing the girls softball program
this year. In the past girls have been
reluctant to play baseball, but this is
a way for them to learn about team
work and staying physically fit. I
That's something that is really need
ed today. Some parents might think |
that it isn't ladylike, but we place
emphasis on showing them that they
can play "sports and still be young
ladies.
"Last year Twin City had 28
teams in its program, with more
than 400 players participating. I
think the program should get bigger
and better each season.
"We re just beginning to scratch
the surface. There's so much that
this program can accomplish. This
program teaches kids things that can
he vital to their success. But without
the public's support, we won't be
able to do very-much at all, -
Wilkins concluded.
