Winston-Salem Chronicle MONEY WATCH By THEODORE R. DANIELS Buying Life Insurance Nobody likes to buy life insurance and you can't blame them. It isn't sexy, you can't drive it, wear it, or eat it. Moreover, you have to think about the difficult issues like death and its consequences. These issues and the confusion and complexities of the costs and types of life insur ance also cause many people to inadequately protect their families. Every insurance agent knows that you arc not anxious to add the expense of life insurance to your monthly budget, so you will have to be sold on the idea. If you really believe that an insurance agent's intent is to save you money and give you honest answers, you were definitely born yesterday. A study by the Federal Trade Commission concluded that life insurance is so complex and policies and prices vary so greatly that the average consumer is usually unable to get an accurate under standing of what they arc really buying. If you rely on the insurance agent to educate you correctly, you are making a serious mistake. When planning your life insurance, there are two primary cash require ments that most people need to consider: ? Cash to pay off liabilities or debts upon death. ? Cash to continue a stream of income to the family or other dependents. (In making this determination, you should consider pension and Social Security benefits that are payable to the surviving spouse.) The typical liabilities that need to be paid at death include the costs of last illness, funeral expenses, estate administration expenses, unpaid bills and unpaid income taxes. The second cash requirements need is to establish a stream of income for surviving family members. The amount needed depends on your family's station in life and economic needs. While these two categories of need often stay the same, specific needs for life insurance are always changing. Therefore, life insurance plan ning requires peri<xlic reevaluation to ensure that adequate coverage is available. But stay away from high-priced polices that promise great cash values such as some whole life insurance policies. You will proba bly be able to afford the coverage you need with the purchase of a term life insurance policy which does not make any provisions for the build up of cash values.
