WSSU Offers Non-Traditional Course
The foreign language curricu
lum at Winston- Salem State Univer
sity is placing new emphasis on
preparing students to participate in a
global society.
Recently, the Department of
English and Foreign Languages
added a foreign language teaching
methodology course for current and
future elementary and middle
school teachers. A similar course
for high school teachers was intro
duced in 1990-91. Yoruba, a west
African language, was introduced in
the last academic year.
According to Carol A. Lan
caster Meeks, who coordinates the
foreign language education area,
plans are under way to offer more
courses in Yoruba, other non-tradi
tional languages and English as a
second language in 1993-94.
"The need for well-trained for
eign language teachers has
increased dramatically during the
past five yea^s because of the ever
changing boundaries and countries
of the world," Meeks said.
'Today it 19 no longer enough
for a student at fmy level to know
only English or just to have one or
two years of a foreign language.
Today's students and tomorrow's
citizens will need to know two lan
guages in addition to their native
English."
