rorsyth County Convention to be Held The Forsyth County Conven tion will be held on April 17, at 9 a.m. at the Sawtooth Center. Heading the agenda will be election of county officers to serve through the 1994 election cycle. The delegates to the convention will also be electing members to serve on the State Executive Committee, which is the governing body of the North Carolina Democratic Party. The convention will also elect local Democrats to serve as delegates to the 5th, 10th, and 12th congres sional district conventions. Congressman Steve Neal will be the keynote speaker to the con vention. A number of legislative and local officials will also be in attendance. Jackson said; "We are expect ing a good turnout of Democrats across the county to be in atten dance and look forward to a great year ahead for the Forsyth County bemocratic Party." Dudley Receives Entrepreneur Award Greensboro businessman, Joe L. Dudley received another national honor last week when he was pre sented the medallion for Entrepre neurship by the Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society in Business and Management. In a cercmony at North Car olina A&T State University, Dudley was cited for his national leadership in direct sales, for his service to humanity and for his status as a role model for black youngsters. Making the presentation to Dudley, a graduate of A&T, were James Bearden, past national presi dent of Beta Gamma Sigma, and Margaret Hicks, a member of the Board of Governors of the Society. Dudley started his career more than 20 years ago by selling cosmet ics door-to-door in Brooklyn, N.Y. He currently operates Dudley's Products Inc., the largest black owned manufacturing company in the Southeast. He also employs a contingent of several hundred sales persons nationally. He and his wife, Eunice,, have been major contribu tors to Hayes-Taylor YMCA and the scholarship programs of Dudley High School, A&T University and Bennett College. WSSU Offers Non-Traditional Course The foreign language curricu lum at Winston- Salem State Univer sity is placing new emphasis on preparing students to participate in a global society. Recently, the Department of English and Foreign Languages added a foreign language teaching methodology course for current and future elementary and middle school teachers. A similar course for high school teachers was intro duced in 1990-91. Yoruba, a west African language, was introduced in the last academic year. According to Carol A. Lan caster Meeks, who coordinates the foreign language education area, plans are under way to offer more courses in Yoruba, other non-tradi tional languages and English as a second language in 1993-94. "The need for well-trained for eign language teachers has increased dramatically during the past five yea^s because of the ever changing boundaries and countries of the world," Meeks said. 'Today it 19 no longer enough for a student at fmy level to know only English or just to have one or two years of a foreign language. Today's students and tomorrow's citizens will need to know two lan guages in addition to their native English." Arts Council Accepts ? Applications The Arts Council of Winston Salem and Forsyth County announced last week the deadline of April 28, for Emerging Artist Grant applications and an extension of eligibility to six counties: Forsyth, Davie, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin A pre -application work shop will be held April 19 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in the Arts Council board room at 305 W. Fourth St. Artists planning to apply are urged to attend the workshop. Emerging Artist Grants provide financial sup port of up to $ 1,000 to promising artists seeking to advance their pro fessional careers in the arts. The application process is competitive and open to any visual, performing or literary artist who has been a resident of Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Stokes, Surry or Yadkin county for at least one year and who has demonstrated a serious commitment to his or her art Pre vious Emerging Artist Grant recipi ents are not eligible. Grants will be awarded to individual artists based on quality of work and evidence of commitment to a career as an artist. A panel of professional artists will review all applications. Emerging Artist Grants is one of seven grant programs funded and administered by the Arts Council. The grants are made available through contributions to the United /Arts Fund Drive and a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. Locals Receive Civil Rights Award The Winston-Salem Branch NAACP announced recently that the Sara Lee Charles McLean award will be presented to Judge Roland Hayes and posthumously to the Rev. J.T. McMillan. According to William Tatum, president of the local chapter of the NAACP, this award is given annually to individ uals who have made outstanding contributions to the civil rights struggle for freedom in this com munity and throughout the state. This award is sponsored by Sara Lee Corporation in conjunction with the NAACP. The awards will be presented on April. 1 6 at the 1 7th Annual Freedom Fund Gala at 7 p.m. at the Benton Convention Center. Congresswoman Eva M. Clayton is the featured speaker.
