A Ray Agnew Jr. visited youths at the Piedmont Park Housing Development last week. Pro Athlete Announces Fund Raiser By MARK R. MOSS Chronicle Slaff Writer. "This event is very special to me," said Ray Agnew Jr. 'i grew up in the projects and I promised myself that if I ever made it, I was going to come back and help." "Helping" is what Agnew. a native of the Twin City and profes sional football player for the New England Patriots, is doing. Last year, with $20,000 of his own money, he started a scholarship fund for youths living in the city's four public housing developments' Last Friday, he was in town to announce the second annual "Com munity Day with Ray," which will be held on June 18 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Annex. Starting at 4 p.m., there will be an autograph session that will be followed by an exhibition basket ball game in which Agncw and other professional athletes will par ticipate. He was also in town to announce the kick-off of a fund raising campaign for the scholarship fund. The goal is to raise $1(X),(XX). Diggs Gallery to Present Lecture The Diggs Gallery at Win ? ston-Salem State University will present a free lecture by Alma Adams of Bennett College on "African American Artists: Visions and Accomplishments" at NCSA Student Sung Kim, a student at the North Carolina School of the Arts, - is-one of- four- winners^ of_the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra 1992 93 Concerto Competition. For his achievement, the pianist performed a movement of his win ning concerto, Saint Saens' "Piano Concerto No. 2 in G," with the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra at Meredith College earlier this month. Kim. 22. began studying piano in Korea at age 7, and quickly revealed his exceptional talent, placing first in citywide competi - tions in 1979, 1980 and 1982. He was also rewarded first prize in the Korean Young Pianists Foundation National Competition in 1981. In addition, in 1983, he won the Grand Prix in the state piano competition sponsored by The Korean Times. Kim moved to the United 7 p.m., Friday, April 30. Adams will examine the work of William T. Williams, Jacob Lawrence and other artists, and explore their place in the larger artistic community. A reception Wins Concerto States with his family in August 1983. This summer, as a soloist, he will tour Europe with the -School of the Arts' International . Music Program orchestra. Kim recently completed two years as pianist for the Korean American Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. The Raleigh Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition is a statewide competition for young will follow. Midlife Transitions Seminar to be Held The free seminar on midlife transitions sponsored by Forsyth Memorial Hospital and Medical Park H ospital will he held on ? May 6. 1 2 The program will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the fellow ship hall of Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood Street. Psychotherapists Carole Collins and Linda Jackson will discuss empty nest syndrome, what to do when children won't leave the nest, caring for an elderly parent, and the psycho logical an4 -social changes that accompany midlife. Hearing-Impaired Students To Have Track and Field Day A Track and Field Day for deaf and hearing-impaired students in the area will be held May 4 at the track at Wake Forest University. Coordinators said they orga nized the event to offer students the chance to compete on an equitable level, associate with each another, and enhance their general morale. Students will come from Win ston-Salem, High Point, Greens boro, Charlotte, Durham, Mt. Airy and other surrounding locations. The opening ceremony, which will include motivational speakers, school recognition, the Athletic Oath and recognition of honored guests, will begin at 10 a.m. Activi ties will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Lunch will be held from 12 12:30 p.m. Activities will continue from 12:30-2 p.m. CORRECTIONS H In an editorial in last week's edition, the last sentence should have read:] The Chronicle was not at the bargaining table.
