Teacher of the Year Semifinalists Named Nine semifinalists have been chosen for the 1993 "Teacher of the Year" in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools They are: Linda Anthony, third grade academically gifted teacher at Hall Woodward Elementary; Carian Clary, kindergarten teacher at Jefferson Elementary; Valderia Raynor, educable mentally handicapped teacher at Kemersville Elementary; Ann Councilman, five and six year-old rendiness teacher at Kon noak Elementary; Lynn Fellows, kindergarten teacher at Moore Alternative; Joan Richardson, kindergarten teacher at Sherw ood Forest Elemen tary; Sandra Armstrong, second grade teacher at Union Cross Ele mentary; Sara Fix. Advanced Placement calculus and computer science teacher at the Career Center; Jot McLaughlin, English-as-a second-language teacher at Reynolds High School. Candidates for "Teacher of the Year" are nominated by the faculty of each school. Each of the teachers selected submits an application for the sys temwide recognition. SemifinalisLs are obsened in the classroom by a committee of teachers, administra tors. parents and community repre sentatives. Finalists will be announced early in May. The "Teacher of the Year" will be announced May 20 during the Chamber of Commerce Education Appreciation Luncheon at the Ben ton Convention Center and will rep resent the system in regional com petition. The winner will receive SI. (XX) and each finalist will receive $500 from the-Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Excellence in 'Education Endowment Fund, which is man aged by the Winston-Salem Foun dation. The "Teacher of the Year" is the oldest recognition program for classroom teachers and is sponsored on the national level by the Council of Chief State School Officers, Encyclopedia Britannica, and Good Housekeeping magazine'. CEOs to Speak At Junior Achievement Luncheon What do Glenn Orr of Southern National Bank, Susan Engel of Champion Products, and Roy John son of Spring City Knitting have in common? In addition to being CEOs of companies moving to Forsyth County, they are all speakers for the annual Junior Achievement lun cheon. Business people in Forsyth County are invited'to celebrate another year of growth for Junior Achievement and Forsyth County at the luncheon to be held 12 p.m. fol lowed by the three speakers. The cost for the luncheon is S25-per per son or $200 per table of eight. Orr, chairman and CEO of Southern National Corporation, has more than 24 years of banking expe rience to his credit, including posi tions with Wachovia Bank & Trust Company and Forsyth Bank & Trust Company. He joined Southern National in 1982 and was named to his current post in November 1985. Orr received a master of B.usiness Administration degree from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Arts in business admin istration from Wofford^fcollege. Engel, president and CEO of Champion Products, joined the Sara Lee Corporation directly from Booz Allen & Hamilton, a management consulting firm with offices in New York. Prior to that, she held various positions in marketing and person nel with J.C. Penney Company. She is the first woman to head a large company in the activewear industry. She received an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School and a bachelor of science degree in indus trial labor relations from Cornell University. Johnson, president and CEO of Spring City Knitting, spent 21 years with Fuller Brush in various loca tions before moving to Spring City Knitting in July 1990. His experi ence includes serving as chief finan cial officer for Fuller Brush fol lowed by the positions as vice president of commercial products and then operations. Johnson earned his MBA at Wake Forest University and a bach elor's degree in accounting from the University of Hartford in Connecti cut.
