A&T State Has New Head Basketball Coach
A&T State University's new head basketball
coach has some lofty goals for the Aggies and the
University.
Felton Jeffrey Capel Jr.'s appointment as
A&T's coach was announced at a press confer
ence on Thursday, May 6, by Dr. Willie Burden,
athletic director. He succeeds Don Corbett who
resigned as head coach last month. Capel comes
to A&T after leading Fayetteville State to an
NCAA Division II Tournament bid earlier this
year.
"This program is going to be committed to
winning at the Division I Level, and developing,
as soon as feasible, a comprehensive regional
schedule in the East, Northeast, and Southeast,
including natural state rivals," said Capel. He said
that he will also stress graduation as a primary
goal for his players.
"Mr. Capel has convinced us that of the
many coaches who applied for this position he is
the most outstanding. We are confident that he
will continue the the tradition of athletic excel
lence here at the University," said Fort.
"His 15 years of experience and administra
tion in high school and college coaching inclu
sive of his Division I Basketball experience, and
his impeccable track record in reference to his
ties to and knowledge of the North Carolina
Scene, in addition to his having contacts out-of
state, will serve him well as our new coach. We
welcome this superb coach to North Carolina
A&T State University."
Burden said The things that impressed me
about Mr. Capel are the things you don't see in
the box scores. He camc across as a sincere per
son, a person of integrity and one who is genuine
ly interested in the student-athletes. He is also a
disciplinarian. Everyone I talked to, gave me the
impression that he is a super individual to be
around."
Capel was a Wake Forest University assis
tant for three years before becoming the Broncos'
head coach. While at Fayetteville, Capel's team in
1991-92 compiled a 22-8 record, the best in that
college's history. Overall, his record at Fayet
teville was 64-51.
Capel began his coaching career at Pinecrest
Senior High School in Fayetteville, North Caroli
na, where his teams compiled a 1 1 1 -61 record.
He is a 1977 graduate of Fayetteville State
and has studied towards his master's degree at
Gardner Webb College.
"Our program will not be a seasonal thing at
A&T." It will be a continuing process of striving
for improvement, with perfection as our ultimate
goal," said Capel. He is married and has two
sons.
