WSSU Students to do Research Work In Norway
-Special to the Chronicle ?
Wily ria Atkinson s Project
Strengthen students understood that
they would have to spend a summer
doing research at an off-campus
location. What they didn't know
was just how far off campus they
would be.
On Monday, three Winston
Salem State University molecular
biology students will leave for a
three-month stay in Norway. There
they will participate in extensive
research projects while also having
the opportunity to leam more about
the Norwegian culture. _
The students are Micheala N.
Jones of Madison, Travis L. Perry
of Wendell and Carlos J. Privette of
tfqrham.
"A lot of different countries are
going global and scientific exchange
is now global," Atkinson said. "I
wanted our majors to have the
opportunity to interact with profes
sionals from different cultures. One
way for them to do that is for them
to spend the summers abroad. In
addition to being exposed to innova
tive science and technology^ifcey'll
have a chance to live in a foreign
country and to get to know people
from a different culture. People
from their culture are going to get to
know black Americans."
Norway's strong reputation in
scientific research made it a logical
choice in terms of identifying a
location with good research, oppor
tunities, she said. Also, Atkinson
said, everyone in Norway speaks
English so that language barriers
will be kept to a minimum.
In addition lo the students trav
eling in Norway, Project Strengthen
students also will participate in
research projects around the coun
try. Students have been accepted
for summer research projects at
Tufts University in Boston, Yale
University, the University of Idaho,
North Carolina State University , the
Environmental Protection Agency
and the \1CC lab at Research Trian
gle Park. In total. 21 major universi
ties and national laboratories in the
United States are providing research
experience for WSSU biology
majors. Any Project Strengthen stu
dent who has spent at least one sum
mer at a domestic research facility is
eligible to apply for summer
research abroad.
* Project Strengthen, which was
initiated in 1971, is designed to
encourage biology students to pur
sue education beyond the under
graduate degree level. It fflso pro
vides basic research opportunities
for faculty and students. To date,
graduates of the program have
begun careers with, the National
Institute of Health, the Department
of Energy and NASA, among oth
ers.
While the majority of Project
Strengthen members are biology
majors, students majoring in chem
istry, psychology, exercise physiol
ogy, math and computer science and
special education also are eligible
for membership.
Project Strengthen also offers,
two summer programs for high
school students planning to pursue
careers in the sciences. One sum
mer session is a four-week program
that allows students to live on cam
pus while in the program and offers
a stipend. The other session is a six
to eight-week program that allows
the opportunity for research in labo
ratories and also provides a stipend
and the opportunity to stay on cam
pus.
