Goler Memorial Church Honors Citizens for Humanitarian Work ? Banquet marks first time a church honored ministers from other churches By DAVID L. DILLARD Chromcle Staff Writer A year ago, Claudette Geth crs-Boyd and Ellia Mclver, both members of Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, thought it would be a good idea to honor citi zens who are doing positive work in the community. Unfortunately, Mclver died last November, but she had expressed a strong desire for the banquet to take place. Determined to carry on the vision, Gethers Boyd, Mclver's widower, William Mclver, and other members of the church's Capital Campaign Commit tee went forward to implement their plans. Saturday night, more than 300 - people, attended the church's first annual honorees' banquet, which recognized 21 professionals ranging from entrepreneurs, educators, physicians, ministers, musicians and community activists. The event was so popular, at least 100 people were turned away from the Sheraton Inn Ballroom on University Parkway, where it was held. "I was surprised with the turnout," Gethers-Boyd said. "We were hoping for a large crowd, but Kev. beth u. Lartey , Betty Walker Curtiss Carpenter Beverly Orr Annette Morgan Wilson Louis Hunter Jr. (r) presents Rev. Sam Hickerson a plaque. after the tickets were sold, we hoped the crowd wouldn't get too large." Alderman and Mayor pro tem - pore Vivian Burke brought greet ings on behalf of the city and com mended Goler for "taking time out to say thank you' to the citizens for their good work." Award recipient Michael Lem mon, an accomplished musician and music director at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, said he was surprised to receive the award. "Music prepares people to hear a sermon and for African Ameri cans, we are so emotional, it allows for an emotional release," he said. "But I don't do it for awards, 1 do it Elsie Burke and William M elver because I love it." Gethers-Boyd said the banquet was part of a fund-raising campaign to help Goler build a new church. What makes this awards banquet unique is it was the first time a church gave awards to citizens and the first time a church has honored ministers and members of other 'denominations. Gcthers-Boyd said church members went into the community to solicit names for award consider ation. The committee then sent out 22 notices hoping to get a response from 10. Out of the 22 notices, 21 people responded, so they gave all 21 awards, but in the future the limit will not exceed 10, she said. f Tame la Gethers and Oshia Reid Gethers-Boyd said that the ban quet is the largest project Goler has held and that the church plans to continue it as an annual event. Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church is located at 630 Patterson Ave. The Rev. Seth O. Lartey is pastor.
