Florida Wins Men's and Women's
1992-93 MEAC All-Sports Awards
Florida A&M University won
both the men's and women's 1992
93 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference
(MEAC) All-Sports Awards.

Maryland Eastern Shore, presented
trophies at the annual All-Sports
Luncheon on May 21 in Atlanta
Florida A&M won its third
straight men's all-sports award on
the strength of first-place finishes in
outdoor track, indoor track, and ten
nis; and a second place finish in
football. The Rattlers also finished
thirfi in cross-country and baseball
and fifth in basketball to give them
selves winning total of $6. 5
points.
Delaware State College, two
year runner-up, was second again
with 46 points, even though the
Hornets failed to win a MEAC
championship. North Carolina A&T
State University won the football
and baseball titles and accumulated
43.5 points for third place.
Howard University was a close
fourth with 43 points.
Coppin State College, the bas
ketball and cross-country winner,
placed fifth with 42 points.
Wrestling champ, Morgan
State University, finished sixth with
41 points. South Carolina State Uni
versity (29), the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore (23.5), and
Bethune-Cookman College (12.5)
rounded out the order.
The men's award is named for
the late Talmadge Layman Hill the
first president of the MEAC, which
completed it initial athletic season
in 1971-72.
The Howard Bison, 1987 win
ners, also won the inaugural T.L.
Hill award, and Morgan State
claimed the award for the 1972-73
season.
SC State then won eleven con
secutive MEAC all-sports awards
before Delaware State secured two
straight (1985-86). DelState also
won the titles in 1988 and 1990.
Florida A&M's 4989 title was
its first, but the Rattlers are now a
three-year run.
- In the seventh annual MEAC
women's all-sports competition, the
Florida A&M Rattlerettes estab
lished their winning 58.3 point total
by capturing conference titles in
outdoor track, indoor track, softball,
and a share of the basketball regular
season crown.
They also placed second in
both volleyball and tennis, and sixth
in cross-country.
Morgan won the volleyball title
and registered 41.5 points to finish
second for the second year in a row.
Coppin secured the cross -coun
try crown and a share of the basket
ball title and placed third with 39.3
points. n
Delaware finished fourth in the
rankings with 38 points. Howard,
the tennis champ, placed fifth with
34.5. Maryland Eastern Shore fin
ished just behind with 33.5.
NCA&T, mounting 30.5, SC State
with 30.3, and Bethune-Cookman
with 12; finished seventh, eighth,
and ninth respectively.
The women's all-sports award
is named for Mary McLeod
Bethune, who founded Bethune
Cookman and was a strong support
er ofintercoUegi a te athletics.
Delaware State was the 1987
inaugural winner. Howard then
reeled off three straight award- win
ning seasons before winning again
last year, and SC State was the win
ner in i99i. ?
Beginning September 1, 1994,
a NCAA Division I member institu
tion must sponsor seven varsity
intercollegiate sports for both men
and women instead of the current
six. The MEAC is an NCAA Divi
sion I Conference and its current
membership includes: Bethune
Cookman College, Dayton a Beach,
Fla.; Coppin State College, Balti
more, Md.; Delaware State College,
Dover, Del.; Florida A&M Univer
sity, Tallahassee, Fla.; Howard Uni
versity, Washington, D.C.; Univer
sity of Maryland Eastern Shore,
Princess Anne, Md.; Morgan State
University, Baltimore, Md.; North
Carolina A&T State University,
Greensboro, N.C.; and South Car
olina State University, Orangeburg,
S.C.
