Board injury, sexual assault, use of a weapon, or possession of a firearm or drugs, and all felonies occurring on school property. Currently, prin cipals are not required to notify out side agencies. The second part of the bill - the Juvenile Probation/School Pro tection bill - would allow judges to notify schools if they had placed students on probation. "It's taking a lot of the discre tion away from the schools," said Marshall, a school teacher. "It's kind of like making the school law enforcement" He said that instead of school officials handling fights and dealing with parents, they would now be allowed to call in law enforcement. "You're eliminating the one step where you have a chance to do some rehabilitating," he said. "Maybe the issue could be resolved at school." If the bill passes, Marshall said, school officials will be able to "put it (an incident) in the hands of legal authorities early" in a child's life. Marshall said that because stu dents could get a criminal record, the system will put "them in the pipeline earlier" causing a new "wave" of people who have had run-ins withthclaw. Schools Superintendent Larry Coble, when asked the second part of the bill that would allow judges to notify schools if they have placed students on probation, said some from page A1 school officials would favor it "Some of our school officials perceive (the current situation) as a problem," he said. He said teachers at one school this year were upset that they did not know some stu dents had recently returned from reform school. Next year. Coble said, Glenn High School will implement an experimental program that is simi lar to the school crime reports bill pending in the Senate. He said the program Is in place at another school system and has resulted in a reduction of the number of fights. Adolphus Coplin, the principal at Glenn, was out of town and could not be reached for comment. Coble said that "as long as they are fully understood and communi cated and administered fairly he would have no problem supporting the bill The other elements of the gov ernor's school violence reform package pending before the Legis lature are: a bill that would make it a felony for a student to possess or carry a firearm on school property or to knowingly allow a student to carry a weapon on school property; and a bill that would allow educa tion boards to expel those students whose continued presence in school constitutes a clear threat to the safety and health of other students or employees.
