Woman in Wreck from page A1 According to police. Km Rita Webster, 21, of 1005 Chafes St., was driving south on New Walker town Road about 2 ajn. on June 22 when her car crossed the center line, collided with the cuib on the east side of the street and smashed into*a tree. There were no skid rparks, police said. The 1988 Pontiac, which Webster had rented from Doby's on June 18, received $3,000 worth of damage, police said. Myra Stafford, the victim's sister, said the car was totaled. She said her sister, a summer student at Win ston-Salem State University, was working on a school project with friends and fell asleep on her way home. No ooe else was in the car. Stafford said her sister suf fered two broken legs, two shat tered kneecaps, a broken ankle, a broken thigh bone, a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a punctured liver and required 11 units of blood. A spokesman from Baptist Hospital said Monday morning that Web- ? ster was in serious condition in intensive-care unit. After being assured that her sister would live, Stafford said she and a relative went to the rental agency later that morning to tell them of the accident. "I told him, 'I know I'm not responsible, but 1 thought I'd let you know where your car is,' " she said. She said she explained what had happened and the man pulled out the leiiial contxact her sister i>ad signed. Stafford said he then began shouting at her and her cousin Elton Price, who had accompanied her. "You bastards! You people take people's stuff and tear it up," she said the man shouted. "You bastards are all alike. I don't give a damn if she dies." "That's my sister you're talk ing about," Stafford told him. "He was very nide." Stafford said Price calmed her down. Said Price: "I wanted lo knock his teeth down his throat." He said the man then told them to leave his property. A man who answered the tele identified himself as the manager and said: "I don't know who you're talking abouL I run my own busi ness, you run your'n." He then hung up. Tatum said he got a similar response when he called the agency. "When a man uses those kind of statements, you're going to have to call someone on the carpet/ said Tatum, referring to the com ments he allegedly made to Stafford and Price. Tatum said he had once received another complaint about how the company deals with African Americans. The company has a high number of African American clients because it does not require a credit card for rentals, Tatum said.
