Hanes Hosiery Summer League Begins.
The Hanes Hosiery Recreation
Center "Hot Hoops" Summer Bas
ketball League began league action
last week and the action was really
hoc
Seventy-one anxious 11- to 14
year-olds are playing in the six team
league at the center on Wednesday
afternoons, while 43 athletes who'
are 15- to 18-year-olds are on ros
ters to play on Thursday afternoons.
Parents are impressed and
amazed at the quality of these youth
leagues and also at the fact that they
are free of charge.
f Director Art B levins and his
staff ? Vincent Brown, Queen
Wright, and summer youth workers,
Marlin Home and Martha Reid ?
take pride in their work and strive to
give the kids the best in all pro
grams.
The staff works hard to keep
the youngsters busy in a staff struc
tured program, teaching them to
work together, encouraging them
with positive things, and urging
them to be the best they can be. The
staff says the children are not as
likely to get into trouble when they
are staying busy and enjoying them
selves.
While all of the youth athletic
programs are free at the center,
Blevins says he would also like to
see more of the community getting
involved in efforts to help the kids
and the programs at all centers.
While Roadway Trucking Co.
and friends of Blevins sponsored the
winter leagues in basketball, which
consisted of 141 kids, Blevins is
looking for local sponsors to spon
sor the summer leagues with new
jerseys and trophies. If you would
like to help, please call Blevins at
727-24282.
"It would be greatly appreciat
ed, and it is for our kids, and that is
the best reason of all," Blevins said.
