"Hot Hoops" Basketball Action In the Hosiery Hot Hoops Sum mer Basketball League, the Celtics defeated the Sonics 43-40 in a close game, as Kendro Pollard's 19 points and Jamal Samuels' 11 helped lead the Celtics in a come back to win. The Sonics led all through the game with the tough floor action from Kevin McLean, who had a game high of 18 points; Corey Burchette scored 10, and Ricky Royster scored eight with nine rebounds. But the Celtics stormed back with Samuels driving inside and throwing off to Pollard and* Rico Broton, who scored easily from the inside. Other Celtic standouts includ ed: Tim Penn, Mario Pitts, Antwan Colvert, Robert Lane, Robert Latin and Shaun Leak. The Sonics also received good play from Dee Howell, Michael Love, Aaron Richardson and Jasper Brown. Playing in the 11- to 14-year old league, the Lakers overpow ered the Suns as Ryan Otatti, the sharp-shooting guard for the Lakers, nailed four 3-pointers on his way to 19 points and led the Lakers to a 51 44 victory over the Suns. While Ottatti was ripping the nets from the outside, the Lakers also were tough in the paint with * ?> * Kevin Wilson, Carl Poller and Khionta Buiterfield combining for 26 more Laker points. The Suns were led by Jake Guarantano, who busted the nets for 20 additional points, and power for ward Josh Bailey, who dropped in 14 points. Point guard Shaun Williford had 10 points and five assists; Guar antano and Bailey led the Suns' rebounding, while Wilson and Pot ter led the Lakers' rebounding. In a defensive battle of the boards, the Bulls nipped the Hor nets 33-31, behind hard-playing Allen Hall, Tommy McGuinn and Tony Surles. Surles led the Bull's attack with 11 points; Hall had 10; McGuinn and Joel Justice combined for 10 additional points. The Hornets were led by Jonathon Webb, who had a game high 13 points. Dwayne Hairston sunk seven; Curtis Dervin, four; Jordan Lash and Moe Rogers went with three points each. Hall and McGuinn of the Bulls had eight rebounds each, and Dervin and Webb led the Hornets' rebounding squad. In the 15- to 18-year-old league, the Wildcats triumphed over the Hoyas 52-43. Derek Roscboro and Antwan Owens scored 13 points each, while Lamont Joe handed out 1 1 assists on some spectacular passes to lead the Wildcats to a victory over the Hoyas. ? The Hoyas were led by shoot ing guards Rob Bethea and "Bub blegum" Simmons. Bethea had 21 points, while Simmons drilled in 10. Other Wildcat standouts included: Paul Samuels, John Hatch, Greg Bradshaw and Rob Joer Top rebounders for the Hoyas were Doug Brown and Che' Mai one. Brad Sherrill busted the nets from the outside on six of eight shots for 12 points, while Antonio Torrence dominated on the inside ~ for 12 additional points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Running Rebels who rattled the cage of the Wolverines 55-44. Jay McCullum, Anthony Brown, Dennis Gantt, Patrick Hair ston, Q-Tez Johnson, Brian Dees and Marie Thomas all scored for the Running Rebels. The Wolverines were led by Luther Brock with eight points; Victor Kato and Charles Blackwell had six each; while Ramon McCul lum and point guard Nathan Snipes combined for 16 additional points.
