mmmmt Youths coot off during a free swim party in the Martin Luther King Jr. community center pool Center Sponsors Free Splash Party for Kids The Martin Luther King Jr. community center recently spon sored a free swim party in the Kim berly Park neighborhood swim ming pool for more than 300 youths in the city. The swim party was the idea of Bill English, center supervisor, decided that the community must be rewarded for helping MLK com munity to become successful. Eng lish decided a free swim parly could show the center appreciation with the assistance of Bryant McCorkle, Ethel Evans, Dorothy Wingate and James Irby, to show the center's appreciation for com munity support Two more swim parlies and a cookout are scheduled for July 23 and Aug. 13. Teenager Elected Girls' State Governor Melanie Joy Sellers, the daugh ter of Otis and Gladys Sellers, was elected governor at the 1993 Tar Heel Girls* State. The annual event, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of North Car olina, was held at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Sellers and Benita Jones, the daughter of Vera Jbnes, were spon sored by the Lawrence Joel Ameri can Legion Auxiliary #453. Tar Heel Girls' State is a week long program on citizenship. Each citizen had opportunities for leader ship development, where they met various government officials and organized local governments. Dur ing the week, the citizens were divided into political parties. The parties developed party platforms, engineered campaigns and elected a slate of officers to govern Tar Heel Girls' State. At the closing program. Sellers' address centered on a comparison of the citizens of the 54th Session to a relay team. The first leg was honor; the second was knowledge; the third was unity. The fourth leg, the anchor, was to be run by each citi zen in order to complete the race of life. Winston-Salem has been the hometown for the Tar Heel Girls' State governor for two consecutive years. Child Agency Awarded $90,000 Reynolds Grant The Northwest Child Develop ment Council has been awarded a $90,000 grant by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust of Win ston-Salem. The funds will be used for ren- . ovation of the playground areas at Northwest Child Development cen ters, according to Nigel Alston, the council's chairman. "Our organization has provided quality child development services to children and family in a four county area in Northwest North Carolina during the last 22 years," Alston said. "A primary focus of the council is to continually enhance our learning environ ments." The funds from Kate B, Reynolds will purchase additional playground equipment that will meet the new American Disabilities Act standards and make play areas accessible to children with varying abilities. The new equipment will _be -designed to provide physical challenges and fun play experiences - for all children. Northwest Child Development Council is a private non-profit orga nization founded in 1971 and has a capacity to serve 833 children in a four-county area.
