SPECIAL REPORT Norfolk State: The Quad Squad Next season in the NBA, Michael Jor dan's Chicago Bulls will try to become something called the Quad Squad, to win four championships in a row. To repeat again. It would be something nearly unthought of in today's sports society. _ Well, in one season, Norfolk State University pulled off a four-peat of sorts, winning four different CIAA titles in the same year. The Spartans won women's basketball, indoor and outdoor track and men's baseball championships in the 1992-93 season. Call them the Quad School. The Spartanettes won five of 10 events to win its fourth straight CIAA indoor title at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond iasl February Sophomore Chandra Stirrup was named most valuable performer in the field events. Stirrup won the long jump, the 55 meter dash and was also a member of Nor folk's championship mile-relay team. But Stirrup wasn't the only Spar tanctte, um. stirring things up. Angela Williams won the triple jump; Karen Sinclair won the mile; and Tanya Lawrence and Robin Turner were mem bers of the mile-relay team that won. Then, to top it all off, Norfolk State finished second at the NCAA Division II national championships. T But they were far from done. When the outdoor season rallecL around, the Spartanettes rolled on. Sinclair was the star Of the CIAA out door finals, sprinting to championships in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs while also anchoring Norfolk's championship 100 meter relay team. Then, at the outdoor NCAA national finals, the Spartans finished fourth out of 39 schools. Stirrup was national champion in the 1(H)- and 200-mcter dashes, and her 100 time of 11.2 seconds and her 2(X) time of 22.85 seconds were both national records. The Hoops Season In basketball, Norfolk State has long been king of the CIAA. Last Februasy, the Spartanettes won their third straight CIAA title and will look, like Chicago's Bulls, to win a four-ward next season. Norfolk State finished 29-3 and earned a trip to Division II's version of the Final Four, the Elite Eight, last March.
