Donley P. Shannon-Young receivts a standing ovation after playing an alma mater. Alumni Association Holds Reunion The Gary District Alumni Association of Gvy, W. Va. held its 27th annual reunion in Rochester, N.Y. July 2-4 at the Stouffer Rochester Plaza Hotel. The theme was MSomething Inside So Strong." Donley P. Shannon-Young played the alma mater and received a standing ovation. Scholarship Program At the Greensboro Joseph Koury Convention Center, judges selected Kim Rolle from Nassau, Bahamas, and Jason Shaffner from Dallas, Texas as winners of the 22nd Annual Miss and Mr. Black Teenage Scholarship Program. Mote than 30 teeo-ageis from across the country and beyond par ticipated in the program to win scholarships to historically black colleges and universities. As pro , can receive scholarships to institu tions such as Hampton University, Howard University and Spelman College. Participants in the program are between the ages of 14 and 17 and are judged on the articulation, creativity, poise, and talent - not physical attractiveness, clothes or size. The Black Teen-age Scholar ship Program is a subsidiary of the Washington D.C.-based Black Teenage World Educational Fund. The organization's prime objec tives are to raise the cultural awareness of black teen-agers and to provide educational outreach opportunities. Over the past 22 years, millions of dollars in col lege scholarships have been pro vided to teen-agers through the program. For additional information, contact Felicia Walker Blow at (804) 399-8924. Director to Lead Lecture The Sawtooth Center for Visual Art will present a lecture, "Folk Art from All Over! Motiva tion and Methodology" on Tuesday from 7-9:30 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by Brooke D. Ander son, director of the Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University. Anderson will talk about the work of self-taught artists from places as diverse as Poland, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, England and the United States. Discussion will begin with semantics: what is folk art, self taught art and outsider art Looking at individual artists, participants will explore different methods and creative impulses. Participants are encouraged to bring different scrap materials with them for a hands-on collaborative concluding project The fee for the program is $4. Preregistration is required for all Sawtooth Center classes and workshops. For infor mation and registration call week days between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 723-7395. The Winston-Salem officers are: Rita Maxwell-Tucker, presi dent; the Rev. Lawrence Moore, vice president; Linda Hampton Brown, secretary; Billie Mitchell Matthews, treasurer; and Helen Waller Moore, sergeant of arms. Boston Community Plans "Round-Up" The Boston/Boston Cottage community is making plans for the first annual "Boston Round-Up to be held Aug. 21 from 3-7 p.m. in The block of West 13th Street located between old Cherry and Cherry-Marshall streets. The event will be a reunion of former and present residents of the community between old Cherry Street and Northwest Boulevard, west to Reynolda Road; old Cherry Street east to Pittsburgh Avenue, north to 27th Street; and all the streets within the area.
