Sorority Holds National Convention Members of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Soror ity Inc. recently attended a 64th Anniversary Convention in St. Louis, Mo. Soror Doretha Hornbuckle, national president, opened the con vention by introducing the theme: "Business Women Empowering the People." Delegates attended leadership ti aii ling workshops with Aeiheme? "Expanding the Consciousness of Today's Leaders. Sessions included the topics: "Components of a Business Plan," "Financial Planning Is Essential to Financial Planning," "Youth in Cri sis," "A Serious Shortage in the Black Community," "Grantman ship: Writing Successful Propos als," "Assault on Illiteracy Process," and "Planning for Successful Con ferences and Conventions." Workshops were conduced by: Bill Mallory, U.S. Department of Labor/Minority Business: William Young, associate vice president. Investment Banking, A.G. Edwards and Sons Inc.; Charlotte Maull, a ; ? licensed professional counselor, mental health therapist; Jackie Lynch, hospital/community devel opment specialist. Regional Organ Bank of Illinois Inc.; Pat Schau mann, St. Louis Association of Meeting Planner International; and Tommie Johnson, retired associate professor of education, Wayne State University. Beta Alpha Chapter sorors who attended were: Eristeen Lash, chapter president; Daisy Pur rah, second vice president; Arrie Wright, chapter dean of pledgees; and Thelma Bamett, pelati. Summer Enrichment Program Held The Beta Alpha Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Inc. recently completed a Summer Enrichment Program at Piedmont Park Recre ation Center. Twenty community youths participated in the program. The children received assis skills. The five-week program also included games and reading to the children. During the last session, the youths explained how beneficial the program was to them. Thr kids said they got htlp with improving their math skills and reading skills. After the discussion period a video was shown. They received certificates of attendance for their participation in the program. ... Sorors of the chapter plan to work in an afterschool homework program at the center, Monday through Thursday, from 4-5 p.m. Others are invited to come and help the youths.
