Winston
Blount Clarifies Who Played the Game
By DEBY JO FERGUSON '
Chronicle Sports Writer
' The stadium was busting at the
seams with a crowd enduring
elbow-to-elbow room last Saturday
night, when Winston Salem State
University hosted North Carolina
A&T State University and, to the
disappointment of many Rams fans,
faced a 49-21 loss.
Was it a game between to col
lege teams or a rival between Coach
Kermit Blount of the Winston
Salem State Rams and Coach Bill
Hayes of the A&T University
Aggies?
Before the game the big ques
tion was: How does it feel to be
playing against your former coach?
According to Blount, "It was a
game between two teams, the Rams
and Aggies. I've been playing
against Coach Hayes every since
I've been coaching. It was the media
that tried to make it a game-between
the two of us, just to sell a game
?off,
"I didn't want that to happen
and I don't think Cbach Hayes did
either. Myself and my staff and
Coach Hayes and his staff are good
friends.' Hayes is a very well known
coach, and he's a winner. So if
you're going to play against his
team, you better know ahead of
_^dime that his team will be prepared.
^^Y'l think we played well, we
^ gave up too many big plays in the
second quarter. We had people in
the right places, but they didn't
make the play and missed a lot of
tackles. But we are still a young
team.
"I was displeased with the per
sonal fouls we received. But the
fgies' depth just caught up to us,"
said. ^
Blount did feel that this loss
will help them as a team after that
big win against Elizabeth City just
the week before.
"I did want our players to
understand that we are not as good
as they think we are and are not
unbeatable, so this game had its
positive aspects to it. The loss will
be good for us as a, team to work
harder."
Coach Blount, a Richmond,
Va. native, returned to WSSU after
several successful coaching years in
the Division 1-AA level and is start
ing fresh at WSSU with a very
young team.
It wasn't time for payback for
the Aggies, as fans flocked to see
former Ram quarterback Blount lay
it on Coach Hayes of A&T. It was
a fame against two colleges, and as
Blount so clearly put it , " It was the
athletes who had to get out there
and play ball ? not myself and
Coach Hayes."
? ??
The Rams had 17 first downs,
132 yards rushing, 16 tackles and
73 yards lost rushing. There were
19 pass attempts with eight comple
tions and two interceptions.
The Aggies had 26 first downs,
406 yards rushing, three tackles and
six yards lost rushing. There were
25 passing attempts with 10 com
pletions and no interceptions.
Was this the end for the WSSU
Rams? Not by any means. *
Now that the rival game of the
season is over, Blount and his team
can get back down to the business
at hand (football), as they travel to
face Howard University this Satur
day.
Top-Ranked Linebacker
Adds to Rams' Defense
by SAMUEL G. PURYEAR JR.
Special to the Chronicle
Black College Sports
Review magazine has Winston
Salem State University senior
outside linebacker Antonio
Stevenson ranked as one of the
10 best black college players in
the nation. Coach Kermit Blount
calls Stevenson one of the best
ever to play at WSSU. Regard
less of any label, Stevenson will
be expected to repeat his All
Conference performance from a
year ago and help the Rams
regain their CIAA dominance.
During last season, Steven
son led the CIAA in sacks with
1 1 and recorded 95 tackles, but
times have definitely changed.
Coach Blount not only shed the
infamous wing-T offense upon
arrival at WSSU but also intro
duced a new wrinkle in the Rams
defense.
Stevenson is no longer rele
gated to simply being a pass
rusher. He is now responsible for
recognizing different coverages,
reading receivers, containment
and watching the quarterback.
