'Handtastic' Performer Has Novel Art Form By DAVID L. nn | /mp Chroaick Staff Writer Thousands of people stood in itt^nrfanre with their hands c*er_ their hearts, as they listened to the national anthem before t Winston Salem Spirits game last year. They all cheered and applauded the solo performance by Spencer Lancaster, who many thought was a flutist. But Lancaster played the national anthem with his hands. Yes, his bare hands. . "They loved it/ he said. "Everybody tells me they have never seen anyone do that before." Lancaster, 35, a native of Washington, D.C., said he has been playing music on his hands since his ' childhood. His unique sound ? which closely resembles that of a pan flute ? is done by placing his hands in front of his mouth and blowing air into them. The air bounces off his hands and he "plays^ different notes by moving his fingers up and down in a similar manner as if opening and closing the holes of a flute. "I started doing it when I was Spencer Lancaster around 10 years old playing cow boys and Indians with my play mates," Lancaster said. "I used to do this call to let my friends know where I was." At age 25, Lancaster's friends enlightened him to the fact that his call was more than just a signal but an artform. "They told me, Don't give up and you should keep doing it,' " he said. "But I soon discovered it was a gift from God." Lancaster calls his art the -Handtastic Hands of Spencer Lan caster, and upon moving to Win ston-Salem in 1989, he soon became a popular novelty.
