Contest at Fairgrounds
Will 'Bring Gospel to
the People'
By DAVID L. DILLARD
Chronicle Staff Writer
The Dixie Classic Fair will not
leave God out of its events this
year, said Maxine Gwynn, as plans
are under way tc "bring the gospel
to the people" by co-sponsoring the
first annual Winston-Salem Chroni
cle Gospel Contest.
Gwynn and co-chair A1 Martin
have spent the last few weeks plan
ning the event and working with
traditional gospel choirs, groups and
soloists from across tne l nad, as
they hone their down-home, gospel
sounds for the upcoming contest,
Oct. 4-7. ~
"I tell people we're gonna have
church at the fairgrounds," Gwynn
said. "We have been trying to make
sure we have a good turnout this
year."
Gwynn. a former singer with
the Queenette Gospel Singers, a
popular, late- 1960s group, said she
wanted to be involved to work with
Martin and to help promote tradi
tional gospel music.
"I'm not really concerned about
them singing to win a contest," she
said. "My main thing is to have
revival on the fairgrounds and put
God first. ''
Pat J^andingham of Forsyth
fiuneral Home will be mistress of
Jeremonies on opening night.
"It's our way of continuing
community involvement," she said.
"People can expect to be blessed
and encouraged by the choirs, and
expect the unexpected."
The event will also feature
entertainment from the Mighty .
Wonders and the Rev. John Heath,
pastor of Righteous Church of God.
Heath, a traditional gospel singer
stressed the need to keep down
home gospel alive.

Did you live in this
city before 1950?
If so, I need your help. There is an ongo

Church, located in Old Salem. If anyone has
recollections pertaining to this Moravian
church before it was moved from Old Salem
(March 16, 1952), I would like to talk with
you. I would also like to talk with people
who lived in Happy Hill Gardens before
1952.
If you have any information, please con
