Han Ey Gets Job at TuskeqEE When Haney Catchings was offensive coordinator at Tuskegee University, his teams put up some big numbers. The Tigers averaged 37.3 points a game - during his two-year tenure from 1990-91 and had a 14-7 record. In mid-July, Catchings was named head coach at Tuskegee after James Martin resigned to become athletic director at South Carolina State. Catchings spent the past two years as offensive coordinator at Alabama State. "He is a real class act," said Alabama State coach Houston Markham. "He served us well during his time here. I think he'd do a marv job for Tuskegee. They will be a good team under him. It's our loss and their gain." helping the Tigers rebound from a 3-6-1 last season under Martin. "Yes, I'm excited. But there's a lor to do," . Catchings said. Tuskegee ran the run-and-shoot offense during Catchings' tenure. "I expect us to be good," Catchings said. "I'm pretty familiar with things here, and that should help." The 44-year-old Catchings is familiar with the head coach's chair, having occupied that post before at Prairie View part of the 1987 season and all of the 1988-89 sea son. The Panthers, long a doormat in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, were 9-21 1 during Catching's tenure. After the 1989 season. Prairie View dropped football after widespread problems in the athletic department. Trouble began in 1989, when players started complaining about long practices ? as long as six hours, according to a Houston Post story from that year ? and brutal workout habits. NCAA investigations found that no Since reinstating football in 1991, Prairie View has yet to win a game. Catchings and former Prairie View athlet ic director Brutus Jackson resigned. "Everything I've done is in the past, and I don't look back in the past. Only the people that are ignorant of the facts want to look in the past. That's what 1 always tell players about bal (games. It they keep looking at the past, something in front of them is going to run them over ? because they didn't sec it." ? Markham has had to replace his offensive coordinator the past two years. In 1992, John McKenzie was lured away by Jackson State, his alma mater, right after leading Alabama State to., its most productive offensive season ever. Jerome Harper left Markham's staff as defensive coordinator in 1992 to become Fayetteville State's coach. "It just speaks well of our program," Markham said. "Obviously people like what we and our coaches are doing. Their programs just become an extension of ours. I don't have a problem with them leaving. Maybe 1 shouldn't do as good a job hiring people." ? By Derrick Mahout V BAM STATE - J Honey C ate kings, offensive coordinator for Alabama State. HEY BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL FANS!!!
