Community Beriefs Salem College to Host Organ Recital The Salem College School of Music -will host a recital by the stu dents of John and Margaret Mueller, professors of organ, Monday, Nov. 8 at Shirley Recital Hall in the Salem Fine Arts Center. The Win ston-Salem Chapter of the American Guild of Organists is sponsoring the recital to encourage young people to study organ and to enter the field of church music. The recital is free to the public. The following students from Salem College, the Salem College Community Music School, and the North Carolina School of the Arts will perform: Steve Wooddell, Keith Whitted, Erica Johnson, Robertson Ferguson, Larnie Yuson, Thomas Manning, Rebecca Sears, James Gregory, Brandon Clayton, Kay Spencer, Carlise Linker, Jennifer Yuson, Marie Bellin, and Joy Milan. Fall Concert The Piedmont Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform under the direction of Robert Simon at Hanes Auditorium in the Fine Arts Center of Salem College on Sunday. Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. For their fall concert the Pied mont Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform a variety of exciting classic works for wind ensemble highlight by Percy Grainger's Lin conshire Posy. Since its debut in 1937, Lincolnshire Posy has becqpne the pinnacle of wind band literature. Other works to be included are: The Force of Destiny by Verdi, Suite of Old American Dances by Bennett, From Every Horizon by Dello Joio, Leemans-March of the Belgian Paratroopers and King's heart stir ring "Barnum and Bailey's Favonte". Free Concert Trombonist Robert Trowers, a fea ture musician with the Count Basie Band, will perfonm in a free concert with the Winston-Salem State Uni versity Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 10, in the Albert. R Anderson Center auditorium. Trowers, who at one time was a member of the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, has also appeared in con cert with pianist Bobby Short. Salem and new president of NCA HAM (North Caroiina Assoc. of Healthcare and Admitting Man agers), attended the 3rd National Annual Government Relations Sym posium on Oct 1 4 &15 in Alexan dria, Va. Representatives from hos ? pital all across the country were in attendance. The program of events were well planned and gave up-to-the minute information that will help meet the healthcare reform chal lenges soon to come. Birdie was installed as NCA HAM President in June 1993. Her term will expire June 1994. Women's Health The Winston-Salem Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) invites the public to a free program entitled "The Politics of Women's Health" on Monday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. The program is by Sally Schumacher, Ph. D., an Asso ciate Professor and Section Head for Social Science and Health Policy at the Bowman Gray School of Medi cine. The YMCA, 1201 Glade Street, sponsoring the program. The cost is free. For more information call 788 1771. , Parent Weekend Alumnus Darryl Durham to Give Keynote Address at School of the Arts' Parents' Weekend Alumnus Darryl Durham, exec utive director of the Harlem School of the Arts in New York, will give the keynote address at the 1993 Par ents' Weekend. Nov 6 and 7, at the North Carolina School of the Arts. ? . Durham will speak at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, preceding a brunch for parents in the Performance Place lobby on the School campus, 200 Waughtown Street A clarinetist, Durham is a native of Greensboro, He graduated from high school at the North Car olina School of the Arts in 1979. He continued his studies at The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hop kins University, where he received a Bachelor of Music, and at Boston University, where he received a Master of Music. Durham has performed throughout the United States and Europe. Durham serves on the advi sory board of New York's Center for Contemporary Opera and on the Arts and Culture Council of the New York State Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and Institute for Nonviolence. He is the former director of the Project SEARCH Program of the Boston Conserva tory. Parents* Weekend opens Satur day, Nov. 6, with a welcome by School of the Arts Chancellor Alex C. Ewing. A school wide open house for parents later in the day includes the opportunity to view rehearsals as well as a Visual Arts exhibit. Community Awareness Day Celebrated f t~ ,4..* " tu _ ? 1 u.. a ? - Under rainy skies and cool weather about 110 people gather Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Masonic Temple for the 15th District Masonic Community Awareness Day. The event was sponsored by Ironic Lodge # 72, Olympic Lodge # 795, Bivouac Lodge # 503, Salem Lodge #139, James H. Young Lodge #670, Red Rock Lodge # 809 and other private donations. Agencies present were First Step, Aid Task Force, Police Dept, Fire Dept. Displays were by Big Brother/Big Sister and Forsyth County Agriculture Extension were provided. t V . 1*. Fraternity to Celebrate "Achievement Week The Psi Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in obser vance of National Achievement Week, will hold its annual celebra tion Nov. 5-7. Brother Lonnie C. Holman, Sixth District Representative of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. from Moore, South Carolina and a native of Winston-Salem will be the keynote speaker. Psi Phi Chapter will honor the outstanding achievement of frater nity members and citizens of the community. The main focus of the celebration is to recognize those individual dedicated to uplifting the educational, economical, and social well-being of people from all walks of life. Activities begin Friday night, . with a social get together for mem bers, wives and families, at the Urban League; The Saturday Night Awards Ceremony, begins 7:30 Lonnie C. The public is invited to the events. Halloween Carnival Held Children and an adults came to the Sim's Center and Happy Hill Volunteers Drug Free and Proud Halloween Carnival on Friday, Oct 29. There were games in which the children enjoyed on this special Halloween Night in the Sins Center. There were police men who enjoyed the fun and amusement of the carnival. Officer Gloria Johnson and Officer Covington laughed and gave out trick or treat bags and safety tips to children who came without a bag. The Omega Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. (WSSU) came give their support to growth of col lege women. The Sims Center staff, Happy Hill Volunteers, Better You and Better me and the Resident Council joined forces to make the event fun and enjoyable. Clarence Brown was the clown for the dunking booth which was the star event. Ben Piggott, Yvonne Jefferson, .Sarah Wester and Darlene Dillworth were happy about the Drug Free and Proud event for the children. The Haunted Fun House was also a star attraction at the carnival.
