CIAA Roundup WSSU Rolls Over J.C. Smith 23-6; HU, Bowie, VSU, NCCU Also Win Winston-Saiem State rolled up 393 yards rushing and returned two fourth-quarter interceptions for touchdowns in a 23-6 win over Johnson C. Smith at Bowman-Gray Stadium Saturday. * The win kept WSSU in the hunt for second place in the CIAA with Virginia State, who won 41-6 over Virginia Union. First-place Hampton clinched the conference title with a 40-0 victory over Eliza beth City State. The Rams took the opening kickoff and marched 49 yards to score on a Richard Huntley's 6-yard run. The Rams' defense set up a Wesley Williamson field goal later in the half on a fumble recovery to put WSSU ahead 10-0. Terry Badger and Donnell McDonald paced the WSSU defense by -returning a pair of Wesley Tate interceptions for touchdowns to seal the victory. McDonald's return early in the fourth quarter put the Rams aheadl7-0 while Badger's pickoff closed the game's scoring. Huntley ran for 235 yards Sat urday, giving him 1,319 for the sea son with two games remaining. In other CIAA action: ? No. 3 Hampton clinched its second consecutive CIAA title on the strength of a balanced offensive attack to dominate Elizabeth City for its 12th straight regular-season win. The Pirates (9-0, 7-0 CIAA), who are one game ahead of Virginia State in the conference, guaranteed itself the championship by running to a 33-0 halftime lead. Hampton forced seven Viking turnovers and finished with 517 yards total offense. The Pirates were dominant in both passing and rushing the ball for 268 and 249 yards, respectively. Hampton would still win the conference crown by virtue of a 42 14 win over Virginia State Oct. 9. ? Bowie State continues its amazing turnaround by grinding out 154 yards rushing by blanking Fayetteville State in a 18-0 upset at Bulldog Stadium. After going winless for ten straight games, Bowie State has played the role of spoiler for the second straight time. The Bulldogs upset third-place Winston-Salem State 27-13 and are 3-1-1 in their last five games. ? Virginia State racked up 336 yards in the air and recorded seven sacks to solicfify the Trojans' hold on second place in a 41-6 pounding of Virginia Union. Virginia State also ran for 181 yards and forced two Virginia Union fumbles as the Trojans ran out to a 20-0 first-half lead and never looked back. ? N.C. Central scored five touchdowns on the ground and amassed 285 yards to defeat hapless Livingstone 38-18 in a homecoming victory. MEAC Roundup Howard, A&T Continue Dominance Howard continued its hot streak by breezing to a 34-9 homecoming win over non-conference foe More house Saturday to remain undefeat ed going into a weekend of big games. In other MEAC action, A&T came from behind to beat Bethune? Cookman 29-14; S.C. State downed Delaware State 38-15; and Florida A&M beat Morgan State 41-14. The 8-0 Bison, ranked atop the latest Sheridan Black College Foils for the second straight week, remain one half-game ahead of N.C. A&T, Delaware State and S.C. State in the MEAC race. S.C. State will travel to Howard while S.C. State plays host to Delaware State Saturday. Howard raced to 27-3 halftime lead and coasted as senior quarter back Jay Walker threw for 3'(fe yards .and two touch Jo wns while running back. Rupert Grant ran in two. Senior wide receiver Gary Harrell had five receptions in the contest, giving him 166 for his star Herbert Harbison's career MEAC reception mark of 164. ? Bcthune-C(x>kman homecom ing fans were given something to cheer for by taking an early 14-0 lead on A&T. Kelvin Daniels' 25 yard run and a eight-yard pass to Willie Fclton had the Aggies reel ing midway through the first half. But A&T woke up to score nine quick points before the half ended on the first of two James Warren touchdown runs and a Carl Warren field goal to close the gap. Larry King gave A&T the lead with two-yard run and Curtis Burgins would cap the scoring rally with a 70-yard interception for the final score. ? S.C. State played an inspired game to move into second place by stopping a potent Delaware State offense. A Mike Hicks run and a Marvin Marshall pass to Freddie I Solomon put the Bulldogs ahead 14 0. A 4-yard score by Del State quar terback Erik Jones cut the margin in half, but Marshall answered with a 25-yard run of his own to put the game out of reach. ? In front of a nationally tele vised audience at the Florida Citrus I Bowl, Florida A&M jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead in a game of two teams with losing streaks.
