Show for
Auditions
' The North Carolina Black
Repertory Co. was over
whelmed with babies and their
star-studded parents and
grandparents during auditions
last weekend at the Arts Coun
cil Theatre. The company was
looking to cast eight to ten
babies for its new advertising
and promotional campaign.
Larry Leon Hamlin, artis
tic director of the company
stated that, "I was completely
surprised by the huge response
we received. I was also sur
prised by the ethic diversity.
White, black, Mexican and
native-American babies
showed up for the auditions.
We thought perhaps 30 to 40
babies would attend the audi
tion. We had no idea the audi
tion would attract 150 babies.
It is going to be very difficult
to make my selections because
all of the babies were excel
lent."
Hamlin further stated that
those selected will become
known as "Black Rep Babies."
They will be the most popular
babies in Winston-Salem and
surrounding areas, he said.
"They will become local stars.
In addition to appearing in
advertisements in newspapers
and magazines as well as tele
vision commercials, the
"Black Rep Babies" will make
appearances at special events
of the North Carolina Black
Repertory Co., National Black
Theatre Festival and other
events throughout the city," he
said.
Hamlin will announce
those selected on Nov. 13 at
noon at the Arts Council The
- afire, 610 Coliseum Drive. Par
ents and babies who audi
tioned should be present.
Babies not casted and
those not able to attend the
auditions will have another
opportunity when the North
Carolina Black Repertory Co.
announces its "Prince and
Princess Baby Contest" in the
near future. The company will
select two babies to become
the Prince and Princess of the
"Black Rep Babies". The con
test is open to all babies
regardless of race. For infor
mation call Debra Singleton or
Derrick Hamlin at 723-2266.

her success in Goodwill's Data Pro
cessing Program. After several years
of unsuccessful employment and a
diagnosis of diabetes. Smith came to
Goodwill in 1991 -determ-med to
make a fresh start. She succeeded.
Upon graduation from the Data
Entry program. Smith had obtained
the highest grade-point average in
her class and enjoyed an incredible
skill level of inputting 14,000 key
strokes per hour. These skills even
tually led to employment with R.J.
Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a con
sumer relations representative.
? Sanders also came to Goodwill
to learn Data Processing Skills.
However, she faced a different situ
ation in her classroom training ?
overcoming the difficulties of being
a hearing-impaired student. Sanders
rose to the challenge and found that
she could learn and teach at the
same time. Both her hearing class
mates and course instructor said
they learned a great deal from
Sanders about the d?af culture dur
ing the classroom training.
Sanders now works as a billing
clerk for Sara Lee Hosiery. She said
determination allowed her to suc
cessfully achieve and maintain her
employment goals. Equally as
important, she bridged a gap
between two separate cultures in the
process of her achievement.
Smith and Sanders will be rec
ognized by the board of directors,
Business Advisory Council mem
bers. staff and employees of Good
will Industries during the awards
banquet.

Rev. Calvin Butts
Butts: Strong Consciousness Needed in Community .
By DAVID L. DILLARD
Chronicle Staff Writer
The Rev. Calvin Butts said
there is a need for social change
because of materialism, a lack of
traditional African values and a
need to better understand scripture.
"The Bible is not the ultimate
authority," he said. "It's a guide for
living, but not the ultimate author
ity. The ultimate authority is a scrip
ture-enlightened consciousness
undergirded by prayer."
Butts, pastor of New York
City's Abyssinian Baptist Church,
v^as the guest speaker last Wednes
day at Winston-Salem State Univer
sity's symposium entitled "Religion
and Ethics in 21st Century Amer
ica."
Butts pointed out contradictions
and differences of opinions in the
Bible and emphasized the need to
recapture traditional values or create
new ones in order to have social
change.
"You just don't understand the
word of God;'' he said. "A distinc
tion of African people is we didn't
separate the sacred from the secular.
The truth of the matter is we've got
to get back to God and don't sepa
rate God from anything we do."
Butts said materialism and an
intense class struggle in the black
community is almost as harmful to
African Americans as racism.
"There is an Intense class strug
gle in the black community where
the haves are telling the have-nots -
it's their fault," he said. "God will
judge white America for its racism,
but He will also judge black Amer
ica for yielding itself to material
ism."
