Boys Club Participated in Violence Prevention Meeting in Atlanta The Winston-Salem Salvation Army Boys Club joined national experts, other local youth develop ment professionals and community i residents from the southeast region in addressing the issue of violence at a conferertce in Atlanta. Representing Winston-Salem was James Blackburn, outreach director, the Salvation Army Boys Club; Lloyd Booker, juvenile court counselor, 21st Judicial district; Pre ston Mack. Winston-Salem Housing authority; Harrison Davis, Housing Authority security; and Belinda Peoples, Winston-Salern/Forsyth County schools. "The incidence of violence is a daily occurrence in Winston-Salem and the Boys Club is taking a lead in reducing the causes. The opportunity to attend this meeting enhances our skills in dealing with this issue and allows us to effectively collaborate with schools, court, and public housing in addressing the problem," said Don Moore, Executive Director of the Boys club. The conference, sponsored by Boys & Girls Club of America and funded by a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance. U.S. Depart ment of Justice, covered the nature and causes of violence; strategies for securing Club staff, members, and facilities; procedures to prevent violent incidents; crisis manage ment; implementation of a nation ally-recognized violence prevention in their communities. "The need to develop a proac tive plan to combat the problem of violence has never been greater,' i said Tom Garth, president of Bpys& Girls Clubs in America. "Violent ^ crime involving youth grew by 409*: form 1882 to 1991. Murder commit ted by youth during that period increased by 92.79c. The objective of this meeting is to help Clubs develop local violence prevention initiatives so we can continue to provide a safe and positive environ ment for your young people." ? Attending the meeting, held at the Atlanta Marriott Perimeter Cen ter, were representatives of Boys & Girls Club from Alabama, Georgia. Florida, Louisiana, .Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina. Tennessee, and Virginia. Special guest speakers include Beverly Coleman-Miller, M.D., president of the BCM Group in Washington, D.C., and a leading authority on social, community and public health issues; special Agent Allan King of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Mr. Thomas Robellar, a com munity affairs specialists from the Bridgeport, Conn., Police Depart ment. Upcoming prevention confer ences will be held in Chicago and Dallas. The Winston-Salem Salvation Army Boys Club has served the youth of Winston-Salem for 54 years. Located at 1922 Martin Luther King Drive, the Club pro vides programs for more than 800 boys in the, area of drug and alcohol prevention, delinquency interven tion, health and fitness, career exploration, and educational enhancement.
