Parkland and Reynolds committed
to similar tournaments outside
Forsyth County. The local schools
will be Mt. Tabor, Carver, Glenn,
East Forsyth and North Forsyth
high schools, with High Point
Andrews and Dudley and Smith
high schools of Greensboro round
ing out the field.
Parkland and Reynolds, how
ever, have committed to play in
next year's event, which Howard
said could possibly be moved to a
neutral site in the near future.
Howard said he would like to see a
similar situation to that of the Frank
Spencer varsity tournament, which
is played at the Lawrence Joel Coli
seum annex building.
Wynn says the continued sup
port by the coaches has been esseqrs
tial during the tournament initial
year. He said the tournament is ben
eficial to the junior varsity teams
because it gives them a look-see of
other teams before the start of the
regular conference schedule.
"It's at the end of most team's
non-conference schedule, so most
teams will be in the flow of compe
tition," Wynn said. "It also gives
some of the younger players a taste
of what a tournament is like before
they move to the varsity level."
The Sportsmen Club will
select the All-Tournament Team at
the conclusion of the three-day
event.
The tournament also comes at
a time of the year when players go
through a period of inactivity.
Teams that do not participate in
ySuch tournaments could spend as
long as a month between games.
Such a lapse between school-related
activities is what concerned
Howard and prompted him to
develop the tournament.
"Most of these schools do not
have the financial resources to send
a team to another county to play. So
these kids will be out on the street,"
Howard said. "This tournament will
close that gap of idle time some
what.
"This is also the time of the
year when parents are off for the
holidays and they are able to see
their sons play for what for may be
the first time this year," Howard
said. "Parents are very interested in
the development of their children's
social activities and it helps the
kids' self-confidence when they see
their parents in the stand."
Crosby Scholars Program Awards
Students College Financial Aid
Last November, The Crosby
Scholars Program announced its
mission to assure that every quali
fied high school graduate in Forsyth
County have an opportunity to
pursue successful at two pilot
high school in the Winston
Salem/Forsyth County System,
Carver and Glenn.
Through The Crosby Scholars
Program, 73 members of the Class
of 1993 were awarded a total of
$338,849 to further their education.
Of this total, S3 1,750 were last dol
lar grants paid directly from The
Crosby Scholars fund to 41 stu
dents. The balance was obtained
through other financial aid sources.
This was the results of efforts made
throughout the school year which
included sponsoring 23 financial aid
workshops and bringing college and
trade school representatives on
campus to discuss provided trained
volunteers to act advocated for
Scholars and their parents with col
lege admissions and placement test
ing personnel.
Based on this year's success.
The Crosby Program will expand
into Parkland, East and West
Forsyth High School for the 1993
1994 school year. The program will
also be operating in Hill, Petree,
Kennedy, Walkertown, Philo and
Mineral Springs middle schools.
The Scholars Program will begin
operating in Reynolds, West, Inde
pendence, Mt. Tabor and South
Park High Schools in fall of 1994.
The program will continue to
expand each year until its mission is
fully realized.
The Crosby Scholar Program
was created by an alliance among
The Crosby Foundation, The Win
ston-Salem Foundation, the Win
ston - Salem/Forsyth County Schools
and the Kate B. Reynolds Poor and
Needy Trust. "In addition to the
financial assistance provided by
last-dollar grants to qualified stu
dents and counseling on college
admissions and financial aid, the
program uses mentors and commu
nity service opportunities to encour
age younger students to stay in
school," said Ravonda Dalton
Rann, the Program Director. "The
entire program is designed to assure
students from an early age that
assistance is available for them to
attend college, giving them hope for
the future."
A keystone of The Scholar Pro
gram is that each scholar agrees to
remain drug free and undergo peri
odic drug screening. This is a natur
al outgrowth for The Crosby, which
has always focused its charitable
efforts on drug education and abuse
prevention. Other programs that are
part of The Crosby Partnership for a
Drug Free Community include The
Center for a Drug Free Workplace,
administered by the Greater Win
ston-Salem Chamber of Commerce,
and Vision '94 at Carver High
School, a pilot drug abuse preven
tion program that emphasized com
munity involvement and communi
ty service. The Crosby Foundation
also recently provided a $40,000
grant to the Winston-Salem Police
Department to help continue the
DONT (Drug Offender Need Treat
ment) Program.
Since moving to North Caroli
na in 1986, The Crosby Tournament
has raised over $10 million for
charities, with more than half of the
total going to support drug educa
tion and abuse prevention pro
grams.
