CIAA Basketball Va. Union and Elizabeth City State Winners in Weekend Tournaments CIAA teams competed in a variet> of tournaments and classics throughout the country this week. Virginia Union University (1-0, 3-0). in the VUU Tip-off Tourna ment. defeated Millersville Univer sity for the championship. The VUU defense held all Millersville players under 10 points and six rebounds. The Panthers' Reggie Jones led all scorers, connecting on 7-of-l 1 shots for 21 points. Warren Peebles, the Tournament MVP. hit 7-of-l 1 field goals and 3-of*4 3-pointers for 20 ? . points. Kenny Sc&g^ns added 1 i points. Elizabeth City State University (2-1), won the ECSU Invitational Men's Tournament championship, defeating Benedict College, 88-87. Five players for the Vikings scored in double figures. Jo-Ve Ford had 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Maurice Bennett poured in 19 points and had 12 rebounds and seven blocks. N ate Higgs added 17 points. 8 rebounds and five assists; Shawn Walker had 16 points, shoot ing 3-of-4 from 3-point range; and Martin Lacewell chipped in 13 points and added four steals. St. Pauls College (1-1, 2-4), in the ECSU Tournament, lost to Allen University, 84-81.. In the losing cause. Melvin Jones had 32 points Spartanettes The Norfolk State Spartanettes (1-0. 4-0) won their Spartanette Invitational Tournament, defeating Shaw University (2-1. 4-5), 110-62. In the first round. NSU downed Winston-Salem State (0-2, .0-6), 97 69. LaTina Bullock was the Spar tanette stand-out, with 29 points in the first round and 30 (12-of-15 FG) in the championship game. Kristi Greene added 34 points in the two games. Rolanda Dent followed with a 31 point two-day total. Trina Blair had 25 points in the two games, while Lisa Rice poured in 22 total points, adding nine assists in the first game and 15 in the second. Shanticia Taylor and Katrisia Arm strong paced Shaw with 14 and 13 points respectively. In the first round against Norfolk State, leading scorers for the Lady Rams were Kendra Home (17 pts.), Dennettra Parker (1 1 pts,) and Mannita Broad us.( 10 pts.). Shaw, in the first round against St. Paul's, won 66-53. Tay lor led all Lady Bear scorers with 21 points. St. Paul's (0-2. 1-4) rolled past (13-of-23 from the field), and Tjm King had 1 1 points. Hampton University (2-0. 5-1) and Norfolk State University (0-1. 4-1). traveled to Atlanta to compete in the 13th Annual Ricky Williams Classic, pitting the CIAA against the SlAC. In the first night of com petition. Dec. 3. NSU defeated Mor ris Brown College (MBC). 93-86. For the Spartans. Charles Newborn (14 pts., 23 rebs.. 3 blks.) and Corev _ Williams (26 pts.. 6 rebs.. 4 assts") set the pace. Derrick Bryant added -15 points and 10 rebounds, and Car nell Penn had 13 points in the cham pionship game. Hampton fell to Clark Atlanta University. 100-76. Dec. 4. Keith Spence led all Pirate scorers with 18 points, and Kevin Gregory added 15. On 'he second night of play, the Pirates defeated MBC. 76-73. Playing just 1 1 min utes. Hampton forward Derrett Boyd connected on 9-of-14 field goals, scorinp ?n points, and p^l)?H in 1 1 rebounds. David Saunders added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Gregory chipped in 10 points. Johnson C. Smith (1-1. 4-2) and Fayetteville State University (1 1.4-3) competed in the Tom Robe son Classic held in Jacksonville, Ala. In the first day of play, JCSU defeated the University of North Win In High Winston-Salem State University (0 2, 0-6), 67-47, in the consolation game of the NSL Spartanette Invita tional . For the Lady Tigers. Linda Bell (25 pts., 1 1 rebs., 4 assts.) and Jackie Pelham (16 pts.. 4 assts.) contributed to the win. Kendra Home tallied 22 points and seven rebounds in the losing cause for the Lady Rams. In the first-round loss to Shaw, Bell had 19 points, Roslyn Stevenson had 12 and Kelli Gilmore added 1 1 . Elizabeth City State University (0-0, 1-4) fell to Savannah State in the championship game of the ECSU Invitational Women's Tour nament. 86-61. Karen Watkins was the high scorer for the Lady Vikings with 22 points (12-of-17 from the field). Tracey Elliott and Denisa Edwards also scored in double-fig ures for ECSU with 13 and 10 points, respectively. In the firs: round ECSU defeated Barber-Sco ,tia, 52-47. Elliott led the way with 16 points and 12 rebounds. N.C. Central (0-1, 1-3) also ^competed in the ECSU Invitational Alabama 67-62. Tyron Satterfield scored 18 points, while Robert Boykins scored 16. They had 10 and 11 rebounds respectively. Fayet teville State fell to Jacksonville State. 75-71 on the first day! Jerome Oliver had 16 points Harvey Petty had 14 and Carl Chasten had 13. JCSU lost 73-69 to Jacksonville State in the championship game. Boykins was 10-of-15 from the field for 23 points, and Satterfield again added 18 points. Both players were named to the All-Tournament Team. Fayetteville was defeated by UNA, 94-68. Chasten led all FSU scorers with 17 points, and Oliver and Petty added 10 and 16 points. Petty was also named to the All Tournament Team. ' Winston-Salem State Universi ty (1-1. 2-3) participated in the Observer-Reporter Tournament held in California, Penn. In the first round, the Rams fell to the Califor nia University (Pa.), 102-72. Louis Williamson and Phenizee Ransom led all WSSU scorers with 14 and 10 points respectively. In the conso lation game, the Rams were defeat ed by Shepherd College 72-63. Two players had 13 points and seven rebounds each for the Rams: Antoine Glover and Ransom. Fashion Women's Tournament. The Lady Eagles were defeated by Barber Scotia's Lady Sabers, 71-70. Moni ca Stewart and Sonia Moorman hit 18 points, each for Central. Allison Forest added 12 points. Stewart (23 pts.) and Moorman (20 pts.) poured in 43 points in the Lady Eagles' 87 74 loss to Savannah State in the first round. In the East Stroudsburg (Pa.) Tournament, Virginia Star* (2-3, 2 5) fell 80-61 to St. Michael's and 79-69 to Sacred Heart. Kathleen Davis combined for 36 total points over the two-day tournament. She also grabbed 23 rebounds in the first round game, while Kendra White and Jackie Carter scored 16 and 15 points respectively in the consola tion game. Hampton (1-1, 4-3), dropped two games at the tournament held at Fort Valley State (Ga.). They were defeated by Fort Valley State, 82 63.
