Clark, Williams Voted Players of the Year Virginia State quarterback Greg Clark and Hampton defen named the 1993 Central Intercolle giate Athletic Association offensive and defensive players of the year respectively in a vote by the CIAA Football Coaches Association. Clark, a 6-1,175-pound senior from Washington. D.C., led the Trojans to a 10- 1 season, the best by a Virginia State team since 1947. Clark broke several CIAA single season marks, passing for 3.437 yards and completing 227 of his passes. Clark also set the confer ence record with 3,359 total offen sive yards and 38 touchdowns. Williams, a 6-3, 270-pound .senior from Houston, anchored a Pirate defense rank at the top of the CIAA. Hampton allowed its oppo nents a mere 74.7 yards per game to lead a team that finished its season at 12-1. Shell Accepts Job with Panthers CHARLOTTE? Former South Carolina State star Donnie ? Shell, a member of the famed Pitts burgh Steelers championship squads, was named the director of community and player relations with the newly -formed Carolina Panthers football team Monday. Shell will move into his new position Jan. 3. according to Pan thers General Manger Mike McCor mack. Shell's duties will be to over see programs designed to increase community interaction with the organization as well as prepare play ? ers for life on and off the playing field. Shell was a former All-Ameri can at free safety for the Bulldogs ; before going on to a 14-year career ! with the Steelers. Shell played on ; four Super Bowl teams in the 1970s ; and was a five-time All-Pro s?lec ! tion. ? Shell had 51 career intercep tions and was named to the Steelers' all-time squad, joining past players Terry Bradshaw. Franco Harris and Lynn Swann. Since retiring in 1987, Shell has worked a$ a guidance counselor for several firms that specialized in placement and counseling for ath letes. Shell earned his masters' in guidance and counseling from his alma mater. ? N.C. Central running back Joe Simmons ended the season son mark with 1.699 yards. Sifn mons was one of four CIAA backs to rush for over 1.000 yards this year. Clifton Davis of Favetteville State ran for 1.591 yards, followed by Richard Huntley of WSSU with 1.570 yards and Anthony Smith of Hampton with 1 .040. ? Livingstone running back Rob Clodfelter became the CIAA's all-time leading rusher, establishing the mark with 4.147 yards. Clodfel ter broke the record of 4,075 yards set by former Livingstone runner Jo Jo White. ? Fayetteville's Davis broke two CIAA records on his way to a 1,000-yard season.
