In the sports wear category, Barbara Puryear, showed off a red hat ringed by red and black ostrich feathers and Norma Vincent strutted a black and gold cowboy hat. Mildred Griffin took the award for the most creative with her “Around the Educational World” hat. The “fun” category was headed by Maxine Leak in a white straw hat and Vema Griffin in a hand made crocheted hat. The show was judged by Andrais Brandon, Olivett Bynum and JoAnne Falls. The National Association of University Women was originally founded in 1924 and the Win ston-Salem Branch was started in 1952 with the first president being Dorothy Blunt. The pur pose and mission of the group is to promote a closer union and fel lowship among university women for constructive work in educa tion, civic activities, and human relations. One of the primary activities of the Winston-Salem Branch is its annual scholarship fundraiser. The Sangria, which is held the last Saturday of May. Any female student who has been accepted and enrolls at Winston- Salem State University is eligible to apply for the scholarship. :s Inc. to Sponsor Young People's Exhibit le Winston-Salem Chapter le Links, Incorporated, is Soring its annual Young Peo- ■Art Exhibit . The exhibit, iSi contains 57 works of art n students in the Winston- Ji/ Forsyth County Schools, DD display at the James T. ft Gallery of Winston-Salem University, and will con ic through April 15 and is iHo the public. To commemorate the exhibit, and to honor the artists. The Links will host a reception on Thursday, April 13 from 6 to 7 pm. at the gallery. During the reception, certificates will be pre sented to the artists. The recep tion is open to all artists, their parents, art teachers, principals and officials from the school sys tem. The Links, Incorporated was founded in 1946, as an organiza- I hS— tion for African American women to establish civic respon sibility, sisterhood and educa tional and civic participation in the United States and abroad. The organization’s focus is on four program facets: Service to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services and International Trends and Services. Links chap ter determine their community’s needs. Free Public Nursing Program to Be Held at WFU A Free public program on Nursing home residents rights, sponsored by the Legal Clinic for the Elderly, will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday April 6 at the Piedmont Plaza 1, 1920 W. 1st Street, the Kitty Hawk Room. The event will take place on Sunday, April 23, 1995 A WSSU Spring Concert The Winston-Salem State University Choir will present its annual spring concert at 6 p.m. in the Dillard Auditorium at the Anderson Center on April 23. The choir—which recently performed in New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Virginia-is under the direction of D’Walla S. Burke. The concert is free and, open to the public. A Auditions for “Annie” On Sunday, April 30 The Little Theatre of Winston-Salem will be holding auditions for the musical Annie at 1 p.m. at the Hanes Community Center, 610 Coliseum Drive in Winston- Salem. Men and women, aged 16 and up. Prepare a song and bring sheet music, accompanist will be provided. Auditioners will be taught a dance combination. The Little Theatre encourages non-tradi- tional casting. All interested per sons are urged to audition. Audi tions for children will be held on a later date. Parks, Host Sawtooth to Open Exhibit Associated Artists of Win ston-Salem will present “Young Masters and Their Mentors” in the Associated Artists Gallery of the Sawtooth Building from April 27 to May 20. The show will include artwork by 25 ele mentary school students in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System and their art teachers. A reception for the artists will be held on May 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.
