Celebration
The Mount Zion Baptist
Church concluded a month long,
celebration of its 106th_Anrliver
?ary last Sunday afternoon at a
Banquet in the File-Goodwin
Enrichment Center with Dr.
Maya Angelou, a member of
Mount Zion, as principal
speaker. The theme of the cele
bration was "Victory in Jesus
Through Worship, Work and
Witnessing."
The Mount Zion Baptist
Church was organized in 1889
by Rev. G."W. Holland and a
group of singers from Virginia.
Since its organization, Rev. G.W.
Johnson, Dr. R.L. File, Dr.
K.O.P. Goodwin, Rev. G.G.
Campbell and Rev. Serenus T.
Chum, Sr., the present minister,
have served as pastors of the
Church.
The month long celebration
began with Dr. Talbert O. Shaw,
President of Shaw University, as
speaker for morning worship.
Rev. Starling T. Chum and Rev.
Serenus T. Churn, Sr., were
morning worship speakers dur
ing the second and third weeks
of the celebration.
The speaker for the final
morning worship celebration
was Rev. Frank Tucker, Pastor of
First Baptist Church, Washing
ton, DC.
Deacon Norman Sanders, Jr.
served ae Master of Ceremonies
at the Banquet concluding the
month long celebration. Music
for the banquet was furnished by
Janice Price and V.l.P. Affairs

Hazel Brown and the Invocation

Dolly McPherson introduced the
speaker of the afternoon. Dr.
Maya Angelou. who delivered a
very informative and entertain
ing address. The address was fol
lowed by the recognition of spe
cial guests and the making of
acknowledgments by Mr. and
Mrs. Chandler Le^ and James
Franklin, Jr.
The afternoon was con
cluded by the presentation of
Church Pioneers and the presen
tation of awards to some twenty
members of various church aux
iliaries by Shirley Grier and
remarks and Benediction by Rev.
Serenus T. Chum, Sr., Pastor.
Pressley to Speak at Sharon
Baptist Church On June 4
On June 4, Rev. Carlton
Pressley, Associate Minister of
New Jerusalem Baptist Church,
will be the 1 1 a.m. guest speaker
at Sharon Baptist Church in
Stoneville, NC.
Rev. Pressley, a native of
Winston- Salem, graduated from
R.J. Reynolds High School and
furthered his educational
endeavors by earning a BS
Degree in Political Science and
Criminal Justice from Howard
Unviersity, Washington, D.C.; a
Juris Doctorate in Law from the
National University, San Diego,
Ca.; a Masters Degree in Theol
ogy from the Charles H. Mason
University, San Diego, Ca.
Pressley is a life member of
Kappa Alpha Psi Frantemity,
Inc., and a member of Prince
Hall Masons, Lodge #64 and a
Prince Hall Shriner of Sethos
Temple #170.
Rev. Pressley is currently
working for the N.C. Dept. of
Commerce as a Legal Specialist.

1995.
She will be errjployed as a
Business and Financial Analyst
for Allied-Signel, an engineer
ing firm in Petersburg, Virginia.
Her mother and stepfather

Cultural Diversity
Day held at Sara Lee
To celebrate its cultural diversity, Sara Lee
Hosiery sponsored a multicultural celebration.
The theme, Sara Lee Hosiery is Cookin' With
Diversity, featured international cuisine with servers
dressed in authenic costumes.
- Some of the dishes were oriental stir-fry, roast
leg of lamb and goat cheese, and Italian Meatballs
and sauce.
Entertainment was also provided by diverse
performers which included the University Diversity
Blues Band, Plank Road Bluegrass Band, Mt. Olive
Mass Choir, and the Guilford Native American
Dance Troop.
The celebration was designed to heighten the
awareness of the various aspects of diversity within
the corporate culture and celebrate that diversity.
The SLH Diversity Council worked for 18
months to address specific diversity issues.>
