Celebrates 60th Anniversary On December 15, 1935, Rho Zeta Chapter (Zeta Phi Beta, Inc.) received its charter and became an integral part of the Eastern Region. Five charter members; Ernestine Brown, Lucy Sheffey, Cornelia McConney, Susie Hilliard and Lottie Smith were presented by Lucy Carolyn Shef fey who was then the Regional Director. In celebration of this event, members of Rho Zeta and mem bers of the Amicae Auxiliary along with their guests gathered at Rupert Bell Recreation Center on December 18. Following a musical prelude, the national hymns of Zeta Phi Beta and their Amicae were sung. Soror Gwen H. Ashley gave the occasion and welcome. Others on program included; Soror Edna C. Revels who presented the his tory. Memorial services for char ter members and deceased Sorors were conducted by Soror Pol lye Bailey, assisted by Sorors Sadie Webster, and Cheryl Bradshaw Super. All former Basilei were recognized and presented a cer tificate of Appreciation and a cor sage. Invocation and grace were given by Amicae Evalena Clay born. A Christmas dinner was served to the Zetas, Amicae and guests. A birthday cake in colors of blue and white completed the festive menu. Holiday games, carol singing, and fellowship activities were shared by all. The true spirit of the anniversary and of Christmas prevailed among all who attended. Soror Emily Harper presided. Music was ren dered by Soror Dollye Mack, who played the prelude and the interlude and accompanied the Carol singing. MLK Rec Center Sponsor Program M. L. King Jr., Rec. Center along with the Winston-Salem Housing Authority, sponsored its 3rd Annual Christmas Giving Program for the Kimberly, Dray ton Pine, and the Cherry St. Resi dents. Over 250 people attended the event. The guest speaker was Art Milligan, Jr., director of the Win ston-Salem Housing Authority. Also on the program was Dorothy Wingate, Melvernia Martin, The M.L. King Youth Dancers, and The Sethos Temple 101 Youth Dance Group. "This was one of the best programs we have had at our cen ter," said Bill English, center supervisor. "Our goal was to give to the community something from us." Over 60 bags of groceries with canned goods, bread, eggs, etc. was given to the adults, and over 200 bags with apples, oranges, and candy was given to the adults. Les Bonne Filles Observe Christmas Celebration The Les Bonne Filles (The Good Girls) Social Club held its 54th Christmas Celebration on December 9 at the Holiday Inn North. The theme for the Cele bration was "An Evening of Royalty." Prior to dinner, club mem bers and guests enjoyed a musi cal prelude by Peggie McCul lough. Following the Prelude, Program Participants and the Mistress of Ceremonies, Betty Berry, were presented. Bishop Oscar Lee Green then gave the invocation and grace. After the evening meal. Dr. Manderline Scales, a 20 year Honorary Member of the club, read a biographical sketch of 21 club members who were spot lighted for their contribution to the Club and the community. After each biography was read, the club member spotlighted came to the front and lit a can dle. Club members spotlighted were: Louise Archie, Elizabeth Banner, Betty M. Berry, Ethel Brook, Mary Cameron, Rosie L Feemster, Gladys Fleming, Savannah Johnson, Linda D. Jor dan, and Cora Malachi. Also, Maggie McCorkle, Peggie McCullough, Desiree Murphy, Ida Lee Pauling, Rox anna Pitts, Bernice Reynolds, Doretha Shannon, Clementine Shaw and Mary Shuler. The Congeniality Plague was given to Mary Shuler, and Rosie L. Feemster, Maggie McCorkle and Roxanna Pitts were honored as the only living Charter Members of the Club. Linda Jordan recognized Club Members and their Guests. After remarks by Club President Rosie L. Feemster, club mem bers exchanged gifts, and the benediction was given by Bishop Oscar Lee Grant.
