Church Sponsors Rites of Passage If someone greets you on the street with the salutation "Habari Cihani." chances are they may have attended the "Rites of Passage" class spon sored by the Goler Memorial A.M E. Zion Saturday Church School. The class that began on Feb. 10 was conducted by Delores Smith of the Winston Salem Urban League. "Habari C4*am" is a Svvahili term that means Hello. What's Happen ing with You? Regally dressed in tradi tional African attire. Smith introduced the class to African principles, philosophies, and traditions which will be explored throughout this pas sage. "Rites of Passage" is defined as a significant event in an individual's life that indi cates a transition from one stage to another, as from ado lescence to adulthood, and that may be marked a ritual or cer emony. In preparation for the passage upon which the partic ipants would embark, Smith had the student assemble in a circle which represented their "village" or community. Smith then led the class in a liall and response rendition of a traditional African song which greeted and welcomed each participant^ "the vil lage." This served to immedi ately create a sense of har mony and oneness among the group. Next the students were asked to unite in a circle and each participant was given the the Creator lor the many bless ings they have r e c e i ve d i n their lives. Finally, each partic ipant was asked to give liba tion. a poured drink offering, to an historical African or African American ancestor. The mission of the "Rites of Passage" is to successfully move African American youth, males, and females, from the adolescent stage into adult hood. The "Rites of Passage" class wNl be held every second .Saturday at Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church from now through November 1996. Those interested in registering for the classes, should contact Minister Wayne T. Greene at (910) 760-9034.
