wriitau. Deaths and Funerals 3$ xl h r\ OOPER Funeral Home MURRY Mr. Sammie "Buster" Murry of 442 Stratton Ave. died July 26. He was born August 20, 1935 in Holly Hill, S.C., to Ernest and Queenie Capers Hood. Mr. Murry was an employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 33 years and retired in 1989. He was a devoted and lifelong member of First Calvary Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities: as church custo dian, in the senior choir, in the male chorus and the vocal choir, as van driver, in men's Sunday school class and on the grounds support staff. He is survived by five daughters, Joann Albright, of Bronx, N.Y., Mary Ann, Ethel L., Sandra P., and Shirley A. Murray, all of Winston-Salem; five grand children, Jerry Hooper Jr., Crystal, Latisha, and Chantea Murray and Janice King, all of Winston Salem; one great grandchild, JaShawn Simon, of ^inston-Salem; former wife, Elizabeth H. Murray, of Winston-Salem; one sister, Mary Frances Mack; two brothers, Arthur Lee Hood and James Hood, all of Kings Mountain, N.C.; two devoted cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Meyers, of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 31 at First Cal vary Baptist Church, with Dr. A.T. Griffey III, pastor, officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Hooper Funeral Directors were in charge of arrange ments.-. THOMPSON Mrs. Lola Mae Grici Thompson of 913 Ferrell St. departed this life July 28 at Oak Summit Nursing Home. She was born December 2, 1909 in Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Thompson resided in Stratford, Conn., for over 40 years and had lived in Winston-Salem for the past 26 years. She was a member of Grace Presbyter ian Church and a retired employee of Avco Company in Connecticut, with over 40 years of service. Sur viving are one sister, Marthola G. Payne, of Winston Salem; three devoted nieces, Constance L. Grier and ?- Lossie Mae Carpenter, both of Winston-Salem, and Priscilla Dixon, of Lewisville, N.C.; one brother-in l^w; seven sisters-in-law; and host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Thompson's Funeral services were held July 31 at Grace Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Samuel Stevenson, pastor, officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Ave. in Winston-Salem died July 18 at North Carolina ?;Baptist Hospital. She was born in Winston-Salem ''Xugust 20, 1991 to Chrystal Canty and Tyrone Cook. !*tamille Renee attended the Day Care at South Park School and attended Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church with her grandmother, Thelma Canty. She is survived by her parents, Chrystal Canty and Tyrone Cook; one sister, Sherika Canty; two brothers, Tyrone Canty and Christopher Canty; a faithful grandmother, Thelma Canty; a devoted aunt, Shelia Cook, two great-aunts, Guster M. Black and Georgia M. Canty; one niece, Cierra Canty; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held July 25 at the fLme> Memorial C.M.E. Church, witfi Dr. Lloyd L. Warklns Sr. presiding. Russell Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements. GOODWIN The Rev. Luther James Goodwin of 2705 Drewry Lane in Winston-Salem died July 23 at Village Care Nursing Home in King, N.C. He was born March 1, 1925 in Santee, S.C., and was raised by Cecilia Daniels Goodwin and Franklin Goodwin. He attended school in South Carolina during his early years and served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1947, he and Mamie Westberry were united in holy matrimony and later moved to Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by one son, Luther J. Goodwin Jr. He was employed at Western Electric and retired October 1, 1979. The Rev. Goodwin served as president of the Benson Music Studio for several years. He was a faithful member of Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, having served on the Mission ary Society, as overseer of the Prayer Warriors and assisted in various pastoral duties at the church. He attended Piedmont Bible College, Winston-Salem Bible College and took courses at Winston-Salem State University. He is survived by his wife, Mamie W. Goodwin, of the home; four daughters, Betty Jean Goodwin Martin of Detroit, Mich.; Mary Ann Speas, Ellen Devon (the Rev. Garland A. Wallace Jr.) and Martha J. (Stanley Barr); two sons, Lewis (Wanda) Westberry and Moroni Goodwin, all of Winston-Salem; two sis ters, Thelma Jamison and Eva Mae Marshall; one brother, Franklin (Hannah) Goodwin Jr., all of Santee, S C.; his mother-in-law, Mary Lee Westberry of San tee, three sisters-in-law, Ida Adjerson of Santee, Ver nell Green of Newark, N.J., and Ruby Smalls of Win ston-Salem, 1 ^grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a devoted cousin, Olivia Goodwin and family; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. WOLFE Mr. Alfred Lorenza Wolfe Sr. of 1101 George Black Lane in Winston-Salem died July 25 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was born June 29, 1942 in Winston-Salem to John Wade and Lela Dendy Wolfe Sr. He was a native and lifelong resident of Forsyth County and was a member of the White Rock Baptist Church, where he was a member of the J.S. Mickens Choir, a member of the Deacon Board, the Executive Board and the Pulpit Search Committee. He was a retired employee of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Com pany and was a member of the Gospel Emotions and Gospel Stylistics. He was preceded in death by his father, John Wolfe Sr.; his mother, Lela Wolfe; two . brothers, Phillip Wolfe and John W. Wolfe Jr. the home; two sonS, Alfred (Natarshia) Wolfe Jr. and Ernest Wolfe, both of Winston-Salem; his step-chil dren, George (Natahhia) Truitt, Clinton Truitt, Maria Truitt and G'Ann Truitt, all of Winston-Salem, and Temperance (Edward) Tobe of Durham, N.C.; three brothers, Richard (Doris) Wolfe, Joseph Wolfe and Daniel (Zelma) Wolfe all of Winston-Salem; one sis ter-in-law, Betty Wolfe of Winston-Salem; a devoted cousin, Minie Miller of Winston-Salem; two aunts, Bessie Dendy of Laurens, S.C., and Mary Ceasar of Winston-Salem; two uncles, James Dendy of Wash ington, D C., and Edward Wolfe of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held July 29 at White Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cedric V. Crawford presiding. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Russell Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements. DURHAM Mrs. Elizabeth Marcella Robertson Durham of 1109 Rich Ave. in Winston-Salem died July 25 at her residence. She was born August 30, 1923 in Laurens County, S.C., to James R. and Elizabeth Robertson. She had lived in New York and Detroit and resided in . Winston-Salem for more than 50 years. She complet ed her public education courses in Laurens County, S.C., and completed further studies and programs at New York City Community College. At FTCC, she completed cake decoration classes, a paint program, advanced ceramics, and additional adult education training. Mrs. Durham joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1940 under the pastorate of Dr. K.O.P. Goodwin, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Adult Classes Nos. 2 and 4, co-leader of the Miriam Senior Missionary group, past president; first vice president and program chairman of the Ladies Pro gressive Club, Women's Day captain, vacation Bible school teacher and Boy Scouts leader. She had been employed as a community college instructor in ceramics with certification by the N.C. State Depart ment; and by Packard Automotive Mfg. Plant in Detroit. She retired from AT&T after 30 years and 9 months of service. She was a member of the Queens of Olympics Chapter 620, OES, Prince Hall Affiliate, and was matron for 8 years; past worthy matron of the Administrative Council, OES, matron of queens, 1971-78 and administrative assistant to the deputy for OES. She was also a member and volunteer for the Smith and Wall Community Flower Club, a volunteer for Make a Wish Foundation, a member of the-0feen way Home Extension Agency Club and a tour orga nizer and guide. Mrs. Durham was preceded in,death by her son, James "Butch" Durham, one brother, Robert Ford Miller; three sisters, Georgia Harris, Josephine Hines, and Mary Miller. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Willie Durham of the home; one sister, Lois (John) Sayles of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Walter Robert son of Charlotte; five grandchildren. Daphne Thomas, Lisa Witherspoon McManus, Sonya Jamel Watts, all of Winston-Salem, DeAudra Durham of Hampton, Va., and Paula Transou Hunter of New York; two brothers-in-law, Roy (Irine) Durham of Winston Salem, and James (Zenobie) Durham of Chicago; one sister-in-law, Rosa Lee Durham of Philadelphia; six nieces, Vicky Harris, Betty Jean Douglas, Druscilla Sayles, Delois Sturdivant, all of Charlotte, Charlotte Miller of Laurens, S.C., and Alfreda Walker of Ft. Valley, Ga.; four nephews, Jimmy Lee Sayles, John Sayles Jr., Terry Sayles, all of Charlotte, and Robert Miller of Philadelphia; two devoted friends, Carrie Barnette and Eula Colten, both of Win ston-Salem; and other relatives and many dear friends. Funeral Services were held July 29 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. presiding. Burial fol lowed at Evergreen Cemetery. .
