Sims Center, Women Against Wanswap books for toy guns By FELECIA P MCMILLAN Special lo Ihe Chronicle Some of the children called . it "Christmas a little bit early." More than 150 children came to the William C. Sims Recre ation Center with toy guns, , knives, sticks and clubs, but left with basketballs, Michael Jordan Space Jam Dolls, books, . baby dolls, school supplies and . educational games. The Sims . Center and Women Agaijrst War sponsored the third annual "Peace Toys for War Toys Exchange to reduce violence in the community on Friday, Dec. 21, at the recreation center. -t The toys were donated by Women Against War, Optimist Club of Winston-Salem, Ellie and John Collins-, Shannon Virtue (daughter of Ellie Collins), the Winston-Salem Friends Meeting, CLASS ACT and the Service Club from Hill Middle School. The spotiisor of the group is Rarim Allah. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity ?donated a girl's bike, which Ashia Crews won In addition, the^Christmas Cheer Toy Shop of United Way donated several toys. Event organizer Ben Pig gott was very pleased with the reductToi\m the number of war ? toys received. In 1993, Santa Piggott crushed six boxes of war toys. This year, there were more children, yet fewer war toys. "This lets me know that we are being effective in reach ing families with the message of non-violence." Piggott said. Susan Wolfe from Women Against War distributed the "Young Peac^iffaker No War Toy Meri^A^ards" to the chil dren as they went through the line. The award represented their commitment to njjnyio lence. She said this yeaTT^ event was the "biggest and best ever." Several organisations received trophies for their par ticipation: the Optimist Club of Winston-Salem, Women Santa Piggott leads the children in a pledge against violence. Against war, Winston-saiem Friends Meeting, and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Poet Shirley Moseley received a Peace Award following her poem recitation of "Christmas: The Season and Reason." She said '.'Praising Jesus Christ's birth/ instead of raising young minds.,/ to shoot maim and kill/is a far better gift,/ than any other." -y Some of the special guests in attendance were State Rep. Larry Womble, Alderman George Collins helped Alderman Joycelyn Johnson distribute hats to the children. 4 , Several groups received trophies for their participation in the event. ' I It's that time againl pie time when the Chronicle invites you to help in the selection of this year's recipients for the "Man and Woman of the Year," "Community 'Service Award" and the "Life Achievement Award." Recipients will be cho sen by the Chronicle staff and advisory team. Judging will be based as follows: "Man and Woman of the Year" will be persons who have demonstrated outstanding character and could serve as a model for others. This could be someone who has triumphed over a personal tragedy or someone who has helped an indi vidual to overcome an obstacle in order to obtain a better standard of living. The occur rances should have taken place during the past year. The recipients of the "Community Sendee Award" will be judged based on con tributions to the African-American community. The individual must have demonstrated a com mitment to service in the African-American community through affiliation with community service agencies, commilnitt-oriented projects or community institutions, r.e., schools, church es, etc. The recipient of the "Life Achievement Award" will be a longtime stal wart in the African-American community. It will be someone who has, over the years, epito mized what role model means. Your nominees should be Winston-Salem residents. The win ners will be recognized in the January 25 Special Edition of the Chronicle and will receive commemorative plaques. Please print legibly and be as specific as possi ble in describing your nominees' accomplish ments. Nominations must be received by the Chronicle^ later than 5:30 PM on January 23.
