Glenn's Josh Howard has all the tools

This season has seen the
maturation of Glenn stand-out
Josh Howard. He has launched
his star during the course of
this season by fulfilling his
potential and exceeding expec
tations. He has been the model
of consistent brilliance and is
consequently the Winston
s .Salem Chronicle's 1997 All

(37 points, 12 rebounds and 10
blocked shots) and went 14-14
from the floor. A perfect shoot
ing performance is a phenome
non rarely seen at any level of
basketball, but one in addition
to a triple-double and against
the stiff competition found in
post-season play, is a spectacle
; with few rivals.
"I was just feeling it that
night," said Howard of his
scoring binge. I really wanted
to win that game and at half
time I didn't think we were
playing as well as we could. I
felt like we were just better
than them and I wanted to

That is not to imply that
Howard's selection as the city's
best player was a result of that
lone display. The 6'6" power
forward averaged nearly 23
points a game and led the
Glenn Bobcats to a second
place finish in the North Pied
mont 3-A Conference and a
near berth in the Western Sec
tional Finals. Howard was a
familiar nemesis for Glenn
opponents this season.
Howard, only a junior, was
this year's most explosive
player on the offensive end of
the court and a terror on
defense.

Bursting at seams with talent
They are indeed Fabulous.
This year's All-City/Coun
ty Varsity Basketball Team fea
tures some of the most out
standing athletic ability dis
played locally in recent years.
The group is headed by
Glenn's Josh Howard., who
has drawn rave reviews-Vrom
college recruiters despite being
only a junior. His jHay and
dominance on the court has
drawn favorable comparisons
to another county player with
the same last name, Brian
Howard - who went on to a
productive career in the colle
giate ranks before logging time
in the NBA.
What makes Howard such
a dominant player is his ability
to take over a game on both
ends of the court. He had dou
ble figure games in blocked
shots at least half a dozen times
during the 1996-97 season.
Then, on the offensive end, he
was the most explosive player
to hit the courts in many years.
Probably his best game of the
year came in a victory in the 3
A Western Sectionals when he
scored 37 points, on l4-of-14
shooting from the field,
grabbed 12 rebounds and
blocked 10 shots.
The future for the 6-6
junior is indeed bright.

Dodd of Carver
was probably the most athletic
basketball player in the county
during the '96-97 season. Dodd
didn't put up the kind of num
bers that most people expected
from a four-year varsity player.
However, he finished the sea
L
son with a 15 point scoring
average and nine rebounds per
game, along with three assists
on 59 percent shooting from
the field. Dodd also finished
his four-year career with a 14.0
scoring average and 7.5
rebounding average. During
this past season he was domi
nant in the post for the Yellow
jackets and helped catapult
Carver to a berth in the Region
al finals for the second consec
utive season.
Dodd, who has already
signed a scholarship to play
football at East Carolina, pro
vided thunderous dunks
throughout the season to get his
team and its fans excited. Dodd
also came through with clutch
rebounding to help the Yellow
jackets overcome their lack of
experience early in the season.
