? fc Alderman Joycelyn Johnson honors Reunion Committee Thm Happy Hill Garden Reunion Committee put together a historical three-day event under the direction of Ben Piggott and William "Rock" Bitting during the weekend of July IT-19. for their commitment to preserving the history of this community, Alderman Joycelyn Johnson presented each of the committee members with a framed certificate of service from the City of Winston-Salem. Happy HUI Gardens Is the oldest liberated African-American community In i Winston-Salem. In the front row are Micheal Kimbrough, Jackie Bitting Neal, Laura Allen, Annette Martin, Ben Piggott, Patricia Ijames, Melissa Kimbrough, Jolanda Williams, Arlene Tanner and Jerry McDuffie. In the back row are Kayyum Allah, Patricia Bitting, Maurice Johnson, Barbara Hughes, Mel White, Lacle Bitting, Doris Tetter Rice, Veronica Bitting and William "Rock" Bitting. Members of the committee were recognised with citations from the City of Winston-Salem. Several leaders in the community were recognised at the reunion for their community service, front row are School Crossing Guard Asalee Jenkin, Curtis "Breadman" Roseboro, Ebonett Gospel Singers, and Howard Ward. In the back row are Marie Roseboro, W-S Housing Authority director, keynote speaker Melvin McDuffie, Ben Piggott, William "Rock" Bitting and Bill McClaln. Businesses that contributed to the recognition were Gardeners, Texas Pete, Holsum Bakery, Winston-Salem Journal, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Coach Caldwell, food Lion, Pepsi, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Krlspy Kreme, Oalllns Vending, Burger King, Charlie Davis, Sara Lee, Summit Credit Union, Wendy's, and Marcallus A Annette Sunday. Minnie Ervin honored at Board of Alderman meeting Alderman of the North Ward No I ton Malloy Jr. presented Minnie frvin with a resolution on behalf of Mayor Martha S. Wood and tho Board of Aldorman at hor husband Jakay tnrin fr. supported hor. Mrs. irvln received this recognition Aug. 19 at the Board of Alderman's mooting at City Hall in Winston-Salem. This resolution was in honor of frvin's receiving the Essie B. Lennon Award at the North Carolina Beauty League State Convention, tssie B. Lennon was a pioneer of the Winston Salem community, who was very active in tmmanuel Baptist Church as a missionary and leader as well as a cosmetologist. The award was named in her honor. Minnie irvln received the award for her outstanding work in the Winston-Salem Community, irvin is one of several members of Chapter 14 of the N.C. State Beauticians and Cosmetology Association Inc. Based on her service to the community for more than 30 years and hor willingness to maintain high standards in professional beauty care, Ervin's talents were recognised. She was honored for preserving "a portion of our nations's wealth ? Hi* feminine beauty of America." She has also added to the econom ic growth of tho community. "I feel so humble and so grateful that my work has been able to help someone," Srvin said. Hor motto is "Service to Humanity." "I will continue to serve the community and the people.
