Howard University's Lady | Bison won the women's champi J (jnship ? ? for the third consecutive year, ! lib ile the men's title was taken by ! South Carolina State University. Howard rolled to its champi ! onship on the women's side by { defeating upstart Hampton, 78 ; 70, in the championship game. ! South Carolina State pulled off ! the big upset by downing No. 1 ' seeded Coppin 66-61 on champi ; onship day in the men's tilt. 4 Howard's Alisha Hill had i game-high totals of 27 points and .14 rebounds in the win over [; Hampton. Hill, who was named iithe Tournament Most ii Outstanding Performer, also |; knocked down 24 points in the 70 [? 44 semifinal win over Coppin and ilh^d 11 points and 10 rebounds in ij th'e 66-60 quarterfinal victory over jt Delaware. ?L Joining her on the All Tournament team were her team mate Darria Boyd, Danielle Dawson of Hampton, Simone Adams of Coppin and Shantell Jackson of Florida A&M. Sanya Tyler of Howard was named Most Outstanding Coach for the third straight year. IN THE MEN'S TOURNA MENT, the SC State Bulldogs had three players with double-figure scoring in the championship game, topped with 31 by Tyler Brown. Teammate and fellow guard Roderick Blakney had 14 points, seven rebounds as well as seven assists and was named the Tournament Most Outstanding Player. James Jones added 11 points to SC State's title total. Joining Blakney on the All Tournament Team were teammate Raheem Waller, Coppin State guards Danny Singletary and Antoine Brockington and Florida A&M center Jerome James. Cy Alexander of South Carolina State was named Most Outstanding Coach. Alexander is a native of Winston-Salem and a former standout at Parkland High and Catawba College. The men's Tournament results included: March 3 - Howard 79, Bethune-Cookman 77, OT; March 4 - Coppin 82, Howard 66; SC State 64, NCA&T 58; March 5 ; Morgan 72, UMES 51; FAMU 88, DelSt 73; March 6 - Coppin 77, FAMU 65; SC State 82, Morgan 69; March 7 - SC State 66, Coppin 61. South Carolina State advances to NCAA for Tournament date against Kentucky South Carolina State will face Kentucky Friday, March 13 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championship at Atlanta's Georgia Dome at 12:15 p.m. (South).
