Carver from page Bl By virtue of their tournament championship after a fourth-place regular season finish, the YeUow jackets had to go on the road when they advances to the playoffs. Their first opponent was Rocking ham County. Carver put all the pieces together and notched out a ? 7-3 victory. However, it didn't earn them a home game. The YeUowjackets traveled to . McLeansvilie to face Northeast Guilford in the second round. After a sluggish start, in which Carver fell behind 3-0, the team fought valiantly before losing 4-3. Again, the players put forth a valiant effort. Although the entire team came up big this season, Starbuck said ; he was especially fond of his seniors. "I feel that the Seniors should be very proud of themselves and " the success that they have all accomplished this year and they will be missed next year," he said. . ? "1 hope them well in their future. I also hope that they continue to play baseball and that they become everything they hope to be. They are my family and they will be missed next baseball season." Despite the progress that the pro gram has made, Starbuck said Carver's program isn't getting the type recognition it deserves He said that must come before the program is ready to become a con tender on the state level. "The main thing that will determine if Carver makes it to the next level will depend on the stu dents that will end up at Carver,'' he said. That is because of the Open Enrollment Plan, in which parents and student choose what school they want to go to. Because of that, we will lose a lot of players to schools like North Forsyth and East Forsyth. "So as far as the future for us at Carver High just depends on where those children's parents want them to go. So for now on we will never be sure on who we will get and how far we will go." "I feel that the Seniors should be very proud of themselves and the success that they have all accomplished this year and they will very missed next year;" he said. "I hope them well in their future. I also hope that they continue to play baseball and that they become everything they hope to be. They are my family and they will be missed next baseball season." Tri-City relays season off to fast start The Tri-City Relays Track and Field Club has gotten off to a run ning start to its 1998 season, its 18th season of operation. The season began for the club with its Johnson-Riley Invitation al Meet, which was held on Satur day, April 25, at David Lash Sta dium at Carver High School. The meet served as a means to intro duce local talent to the sport. On May 2, the team traveled to Charlotte, where it competed against a record crowd of AAU opponents from the south and east at West Charlotte High School. The team's next meet comes on Saturday (May 16), when it com petes in a developmental meet at the Ashbrook High Stadium in Gastonia. Other meets are scheduled for the spring to get the team ready for the AAU season. "We are off to a great banner year," said Buddy Hayes, one of the team's coaches. "Our pre-season training program has really helped our kids to better physically prepared. We are preparing for tougher competition as we approach our AAU season, which will be held at Duke Univ., Charlotte, Tenn., Maryland, and Norfolk, Va. Coach Lemuel Johnson, a founder and director of athletics for the team, expressed gratitude to the community and supporters who have supported the program over the years. "We are now awaiting talent from middle and high schools who are now completing their sea sons," he said. Sign ups for the team (ages 6 18) mil be held on Sunday, May 24, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Carver High School Stadium. Press Box from page B1 * should work to NCClfs benefit. The Eagles won't have to travel nearly as the Rams do for the annual games. Also, it appears that this game is modeled after the Aggie-Eagle Classic, between NCCU and North Carolina A&T, that is played on Labor Day. Several fac tors have played into the enormous success of that game that doesn't figure into this one. First of all, playing the game at a "neutral" site helps. Raleigh's Carter-Finley Stadium is indeed a venue that excites fans far and near. Added to that is the fact that Coach Bill Hayes of A&T played at NCCU. And the game pairs a Division II program against a Division I-AA squad. In the case of NCCU-WSSU, there aren't nearly as many side bars working. But in a time that reaping financial benefits is impor- ? tant to WSSU, maybe the proper steps will be taken to adequately nurture and promote the game. But if not, this might be another in a long line of bone-headed deci sions.
