Purvis Morris will be guest speakers for St. Stephens Mission ary Day. May 31 will be Missionary Day ?t St. Stephens Missionary Baptist XThurch. Scheduled to appear are ^Elizabeth "Liz" Williams Young of -Southport. Young is a retired edu cator. She has been a teacher and assistant principal as well as super visor for Brunswick County ^Schools. She holds a bachelor of science degree from North Caroli iia Central University and a mas ters degree from Tuskegee Insti tute. Young has done Graduate work at A&T, Syracuse and East Carolina University and has done doctoral course work through 5>Jova University. r Within the N.C. Baptist com munity Young is best known for her tenure served as President of the Congress of Christian Educa tion for the General Baptist State Convention, and also for the five years that she has been the Forsyth County Institute instructor for the Missionaries. At 4 p.m. the Rev. Purvis Mor ris, associate minister at Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Greens boro, will speak. Morris is a native of Walnut Cove and presently resides in Stokesdale. Morris is a graduate of South Stokesdale High and holds an associate degree in mortuary sci ence from Fayetteville Community College and a bachelor of theology degree. The Lott/Carey, Magdaline Samuels and the Naomi and Esther Missionary Groups are the sponsoring groups. The Rev. J. R. Samuels is the pastor of St. Stephens. Notable speakers have included Dr. Gabriel Churn, pastor of Union Temple Baptist Church of Balti more, Md.; the Rev. The speaker for this Sunday's ll o'clock service will be Dr. Talbert O. Shaw, President of Shaw University. The service , will be immediately followed by jsn anniversary banquet in the fel Jowship hall of The File-Good win Center, named after two for mer pastors of the church. The speaker for the banquet will be ; Dr. Maya Angelou. Talbert Shaw began his colle giate education at West Indies s College in Mandeville, West Indies. He later matriculated through Andrews University, in ilarren Springs, Mich., where he 'attained his A.B. in history and - ieligious studies and minoced in -speech. Shaw then earned his bi.A. and Ph.D., in ethics and ? 3 society, from the Univesity of Chicago. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Shaw began his teaching career at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Al. as an associate professor of | social ethics. He has taught at other institutions of higher learn ing including Howard University, ' Catholic University, Bowie State College, Federal City College, Princeton University and Mor gan State University. At these other institutions Shaw has served various administrative positions ranging fron dean of student affairs to dean. Shaw has been president of Shaw Universi ty since 1987. Maya Angelou is internation ally known for her literary, poet ic, educational and social-aware ness contributions. Likewise, Angelou is recognized for her acting and directorial accom plishments. She is acknowledged as an orator of ages because the r continued interest she attracts a from toddlers, teens and adults. The morning worship service will be conducted by the Mission ary Society. Participants include Janis Evans, Mae Price, Lillie Mae Smith, Margaret Payne and First Lady Evelyn Thompson. Music will be provided by the Men's Chorus. The guest maker will be Mar velle Wilson Willoughby who is the daughter of Hattie Wilson and the late Rev. W. Edward Wilson. She is the mother of attorney Marqui Willoughby and a member of Hanes Memorial CME. She is also an associate member of Reynolds Temple CME. She is a longtime member of the National Women's Council Quadiennium where she serves on the Committee of Education, Pub licity and History. She was a lay delegate to the 1994 General Con ference in Memphis and served as the director of the Carolina Con ference's 1998 Missionary Institute in Charlotte. Willoughby teaches history and was a semi finalist in the Forsyth County Teacher of the Year com petition. She earned her undergraduate degree at Paine College in Augus ta, Ga. and is completing pott graduate studies at Duke Universi ty and UNC Chapel Hill. Evangelist Christina Glenn to Speak at St. John Christian Methodist j Special lo The Cwomcte In observance of the birthday of the late Dr. Mattie E. Cole man, the Mattie E. Coleman cir cle of the Missionary Society of St. John Christian Methodist Episcopal Church will conduct the 11:00 a.m. worship service on May 31. Dr. Mattie E. Coleman was the founder of the Missionary Society of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. The theme for the program is "Faith of Our Leaders Living Still." Evangelist Christina Glenn, is the special quest speak er for the service. Glenn is a native of Guilford County. She is the daughter of ' the Rev. Charles W. Glenn Sr., pastor of Gwynn's Chapel Bap tist Church in Peiham and Minis ter Janet McCoy-Glenn. Glenn has been an ordained minister for four years. She is the t youth pastor at Gwynn's Chapel Baptist Church. Glenn has ' formed numerous groups and, choirs, among other accomplish ments. The Mattie E. Coleman circle of the Missionary Society of St. John is under the leadership of Kristin Pettigrew, daughter of Dinah Pettigrew, who is president I of the Missonary Society of St. John.
