Expert on environmental racism to speak at Wake Forest University 1 to THE CHRONICLE Poor and minority communi ties arc home to a disproportion ate share of the nation's environ mental hazards, says Robert ^ullard. . , Author of "Dumping in Pjxie: Race, Class and Environ mental Quality," Bullard, who directs the Environmental Jus ' (ice Center at Clark Atlanta Vniversity, will speak on "envi ronmental Justice" at Wake Forest U niversity on Wednes day, March. 3, at 3.30 p.m. The free, public lec ture will be held in Ben son University Center's Pugh Auditorium. Bullard is nationally known for his research in the areas of urban land use, housing, com munity development, industrial facility sitihg processes and envi ronmental quality. He is also Ware Professor of Sociology at Clark Atlanta. ? Bullard became interested in environmental racism in 1978 when his wife was asked to rep % resent a group of residents in a predominantly black area of Houston fighting a decision by city officials to put a landfill in their neighborhood. The same site had been rejected seven years earlier when the communi ty had been mostly white. "Black communities, because of their economic and political vulnerability, are routinely tar geted for the siting of noxious facilities, locally unwanted land uses and . environmental haz ards," said Bullard in "Dumping in Dixie." He is the author of several other books including, "Resi dential Apartheid: The Ameri can Legacy," "Confronting Envi ronmental Racism: Voices from the Grassroots," and "In Search of the New South: The Black Urban Experience in the 1970s and 1980s." He also recently edited a col lection of essays titled, "Unequal Protection: Environ mental Justice and Communities of Color." Bullard's lecture is sponsored by Wake Forest's American eth nic studies program, the history department, the Multicultural Affairs office, the sociology department and the environmen tal studies program.
